Fandom saved my life

[identity profile] thanatoast.livejournal.com 2007-12-15 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I right out refuse to believe that fandom/a TV show/movie/book can save anyone's life. Never literally and probably not figuratively either. Bullshit.

But who knows? Maybe they skipped work to watch Bleach on the day of a HORRIBLE TEN-CAR PILE-UP or something.

That's not what they mean and you know it. :

It can happen. Thanks to the support of friends I'd met in fandom, I was able to get out of a very abusive relationship.

That's the friends you made. Not the fandom itself.

Re: Fandom saved my life

[identity profile] notforked.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
...I think it's more sad that someone would NEED fandom to save their lives, instead of themselves or, I dunno, real people, but maybe that's just me. I don't see that as cynical at all.

Re: Fandom saved my life

People's lives can be saved by whatever they believe saved it. It doesn't matter if you believe in something like that or not.

[identity profile] wuthered.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this.

Re: Fandom saved my life

[identity profile] aishiteru.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's possible. Right place, right time-- it's unlikely, but maybe that one thing came along and said something that meant something to you exactly when you needed it.

I don't know about "fandom" so much.. since fandom is .. well, people. And then that's people saving you. But hey, semantics.

Re: Fandom saved my life

[identity profile] thanatoast.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well, that's bullshit. If one little thing brings you back from the edge, you weren't going to jump anyway.

Then say "My friends saved my life". FANDOM is an intangible thing

Edit: But I appreciate you being logged in, unlike these other chickenshits who don't want their name attached to their opinion.

I think anyone who makes a comment like this has never actually been in a situation where they've needed help to step away from the edge. Which - good for you. But don't speak for other people.

Nor have had to talk someone down from the ledge, either.

Seriously, it takes all kinds.

AGREED.

Maybe you can't understand them, but that hardly means you need to condemn them. Does it really piss you off that these people are alive because of something not 'real'?

Lol, this entire thread is epic.

OP, you sound like such a wisecracker, and yet why is it that the moment someone starts to show the slightest bit of sense in their argument, you close up like a clam? Step up to the plate, man, money -> mouth.

Agreed. Fuck it, I might have said that I needed to stay alive to see Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings end, but in the end I saved my own damn life.

Re: Fandom saved my life

[identity profile] midnightdiddle.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I think it can make a big difference. I know that I was going through a really hard time, and I was entirely alone. My roommate left, my parents disowned me, I was living in a city where I didn't know anyone, and all I did was go to work and come home to take care of my cats. I was really, really struggling, and I was about to give up. So, every day, I would sit down and play through Shadow of the Colossus.

Eventually, I found something else to live for, but for a long time, it was just my cats and a video game. When I didn't have any person to rely on, I had some little pixels on a screen. So it can help, ya'know?

And maybe I would've made it even if I didn't have Shadow of the Colossus, but I don't know that. And frankly, I don't want to try again.

Please don't shoot me. . .
