Tbh, I hate how western fans impose their standards of gender identity to declare Naoto's queer.

I kinda agree on the the Kanji's straightness part, though

+1 especially US-americans. the country that gave us de-queered sailor-moon and whatnot, and now it's all "our values of liberal gender politics" vs. Japan, the country with "severe problems" where gender-"issues" are concerned.

Oh yes, please tell us how awesome things are for lgbt people in Japan because yuri

Off topic, but I was wondering if you have recs on international feminism stuff. It'd be nice to see stuff that isn't English centric, but I'm not really sure where to start.

What even? You are aware that "US Americans" (at least you didn't say "USians") in fandom hated de-queered Sailor Moon all along, right? Lumping American fans' values into a hivemind with the TV broadcast standards that led to the de-queering of Sailor Moon is one of the worst attempts to imply hypocrisy among fans I've ever heard.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-11 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh please. Japan is behind in lgbt issues today compared to the US. What do you think it was like when stuff like Sailor Moon was being published and broadcast in the early 90s in Japan?

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
This. Anything gender related, Japan is behind the times. I was working in a classroom in March, and a 6th year boy said he wanted to be a flight attendant so he could travel. Cue the male, early 30s teacher, smacking him upside the head and telling him only girls were fight attendants.

Japan is so far behind in comparison to other first world countries. Don't even get me started on the Idaho potato it's got going on.

i'm a rabid kannao shipper but i don't understand how anybody can read kanji as anything other than bi or pan???

like, he clearly had feelings for naoto when he thought she was a boy! and he clearly still has feelings for naoto when he finds out she's a girl!! that does not a straight character make.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-11 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
IA on the straightness part but I like the character otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-11 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Blame the game, not the fans. I know it sucks and we all want good queer characters in videogames, but Kanji is canonically attracted to women. It has been 6 years, it's time to accept it.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-11 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Or he's bi.

But the point to Kanji is his sexuality shouldn't matter nor should his hobbies dictate that he's queer.

All of this. Surely the fact that he liked Naoto when he thought she was a boy and when he thought she was a girl implies that it ultimately doesn't matter to him either way?

A sharp-dressed, crossdressing, gun-wielding detective who specializes in one-hit-kill moves? What's not to love?

As for the whole "crossdressing or queer?" thing, it's fucking P4. Kanji is the only character it DOESN'T chicken out on. "This social expectation doesn't match what I want to do in life! Let's explore why I feel stifled by it! No, wait, I'm okay with it after all!" When they did it with Rise--a character who has every reason to want to change her life for the better--I just gave up on the characters.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-11 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It didn't fucking chicken out on Naoto, she is a critique of Japanese culture's standards and sexism. jesus fucking CHRIST, I am so sick of people whining about how they chickened out on a trans character and that's not what she was ever meant to be, stop applying fucking Western standards to her and I say this as a transwoman myself. She is literally a critique of hw sexist Japanese culture is and how rigid their gender roles are.
feotakahari: (Default)

[personal profile] feotakahari 2014-10-11 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's taken as a critique of gender roles, it's still chickening out to not, you know, actually stick with your critique of gender roles. You can have a character be "Fine, I'm female and proud of it!" without putting her in a dress.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
What are you even talking about? Nowhere in her story (that I recall) did it ever imply that Naoto hated feminine things, just that she initially felt uncomfortable because she wasn't used to them - which makes perfect sense given how much time she'd spent pretending to be a man.

It's not somehow going against a critique of gender roles to have her decide that she's actually okay with being feminine.

look, I'm a trans woman too, and I agree with you on almost all counts -- Naoto is very much not trans and her storyline is very clearly a commentary on japanese sexism (esp. in the police force) and gender roles and it drives me nuts to see people apply a trans (trans male, anyways) reading to her when it's not only the opposite of what her character is about, it's essentially that person deciding that they WANT her entire character arc to be a horrible, offensive clusterfuck.

However, the game literally used reassignment surgery as an element of her shadow, and that's not anyone applying western standards to her storyline. It's there, in the game, and the fact that it's essentially for shock to drive a point home was still kind of fucked up -- that's unavoidable no matter the culture.

The entire point of Kanji is that his sexuality shouldn't fucking matter. Quit making it out that he's queer or not, it doesn't matter, he's probably bi and that isn't what he's a fucking critique of.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-11 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The only thing I don't like about her is that she is supposed to be a descendant of Raidou from Devil Summoner and I really don't like that XD

Actually, that bit was added in by the localization. In original it was a reference to a popular JP detective show (maybe detective Conan?).

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
That's good to know! Thanks!

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I like Naoto. She's a good crossover potential (alluding with the comment the anon above said). And she's cute with Souji. tbh it's probably the second most popular ship after Yosuke/Souji back in my old side of the fandom. Her wank is just shitty, though. It's the usual SJWs trying desperately for "TRANS* REPRESENTATION!!11!!1" that they miss the entirety of her character. They're searching for representations in the wrong game.

As for Kanji, eeeh, I like my Kanji cool and bi. He can be whatever he wants.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
The worst part is most of these SJWs scream over actual trans people who go, "That would be really shitty representation if she still wanted a sex change because of her job."

(Anonymous) 2014-10-12 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh hai, last week's blank image mystery!
