That is some A+ humble boasting.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-17 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Not really--OP only says s/he's been drawing/ writing for a long time. That doesn't necessarily mean s/he's particularly good at either.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-16 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
So you've been doing these things since you were a fetus and you're amazing and above us all.

Here, have a medal.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-16 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been a master sculptor since before I was born. Suck it, newb.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-16 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I was Leonardo da Vinci in a past life.

But why is this a secret though? I can think of at least five authors and artists that I'm super jealous of. As long as you're not being a jerk about it, don't worry about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-16 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I'm the only one who doesn't see the humble boasting? It's more that, "I've been drawing so long I don't really give a fuck."

(Anonymous) 2014-10-16 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Why the need to point out how long they've been doing it though?

Unless "SB! I've been doing this since I was 0.463 months old and I'm jealous of people who started last week who are already better than me because I can't handle the possibility that I'm just not that good" then making a big deal that they've been doing it for sooo long is pretty pretentious.

Nope, you're not the only one.

I guess I'm in a really blunt mood tonight, so here we go: I think a lot of people here are profoundly insecure and feel threatened any time someone makes a positive assessment of her/his own abilities. The reality is that Person A being good at something (or having done something for a long amount of time) doesn't take away from Person B's abilities (or from the amount of time spent honing those abilities).

Better than*

(Anonymous) 2014-10-16 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing that might be why there are better writers than OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-16 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. Yes, I was going to say that some people might be better writers because they know the difference between then and than.

I have been walking since I could walk and rarely get jealous of other people with better walking skills. I do however get jealous of people who can skip better, though I've only been skipping since I was 22.

[personal profile] dancing_clown 2014-10-17 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, people are being bitchy to you. I can think of a couple reasons you might feel this way. The most reasonable to me is that it seems like writing is more associated with thinking whereas drawing is more associated with artistic ability. It's not always hard to accept that people are better at x skill than us. But when you think about someone being a better thinker, it's only a short jump to thinking of them as smarter, and nobody wants to feel like the moron in the room.

I'm sure others have already said it, but one step you could take to improve your writing would be to correctly use than/then.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-10-17 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Looks like I've annoyed a few people. Ah well.

I brought up how long I'd been drawing and writing because I'm confused why better artists don't bother me, even though I've been working on drawing longer then I have on writing. And no I don't think I'm a great artist, I'm still quite the amateur who can't get her proportions right. But if you think I'm bragging, then there's not much I can do to change your minds.
(Hopefully I used the right then this time, thanks for the people who pointed that out, haha.)

Wouldn't the logical answer be that you're just more invested in writing? I mean, length of time doesn't really matter. A preference is a preference.

Also, almost everyone can say that they've been drawing since a kid. Crayons are pretty common for kids, but kids sitting down and writing stories is probably a lot less likely. Maybe you feel more guarded over writing because it takes more effort than doodling so you're more invested. And writing is considered to be a lot more intellectual.

I know I get pretty envious of other artists, especially if they're younger than me (lol insecurity). Rationally, it's because I haven't put as much effort into practicing, and this is a technical skill.

For writing though, I don't think I've ever really taken it seriously enough, other than saying to myself, "eh. I'll improve the more I write. Just need to write more and I will get good at words too :D". Plus I also consider that it's more of an academic/intellectual skill to be excellent, and that because someone will like it I don't need to be.

(Anonymous) 2014-10-17 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Then/than writer fail. Stick with drawing, OP, there aren't as many rules to follow.
