40. Dear people bashing this secret:

People are ALLOWED to be squicked. Not everyone can just not be grossed out by everything.

Imagine in your favorite fandom, some people occasionally talked about and posted pictures of big ugly spiders. Big ugly spiders gross you the heck out. But, people in that fandom tend to enjoy those big ugly spiders. You can't really avoid it, and you can't tell people not to post what they like. But who's to say you're not allowed to find it gross and wish it would stop?

[identity profile] akastreakychan.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Coincidentally, big hairy spider-love is fairly commonplace in my fandom.

I don't really care, but the second I see somebody post a picture of themselves making out with a tarantula, I am going to jump out of my skin hardcore.

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
That's not the issue here, though. Of course people are allowed to be squicked by things, but just as fiction =/= reality, disliking something =/= taking it personal like the author intentionally set out to do you harm.

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Rofl, and reciting in frustration stereotypical fandom phrases =/= actually intending to do physical harm with an eating utensil.

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
If I thought that, I would have said that.

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, I left a lot of comments at you and I didn't even realize you were the same person.

We're drawing the line between fiction and reality though, and with your final thought you did not do so re: her choice of words. "Rusty spoon" etc is a pretty common (and obnoxious) sentiment of irritation and frustration in fandom, and thus it's pretty obvious it just also grosses her the hell out with a bit of anger on the side.

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Which is why I chose not address the nature of the OP's frustration at all (what the hell, brain?), just the part where they claimed that As a real twin, they find all fictional twincest offensive. This seems like taking it a bit too far to me, and also seems to imply that real twins' frustration at twincest are more legitimate than the feelings of non-twins.

Basically, I was trying to say that, because the stories aren't real, there's no reason to feel like the author wrote it with any intentions on real twins or especially you as a twin.

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Like, your last statement (which I can get behind) clarified your middle statement a little more, but I still want to address it.

I always take issue with the mindset, and no offense to you, that somehow experience doesn't give one more of a say than inexperience.

For example, I'm a criminology and polisci major. If I get into a political discussion on, say, Facebook, someone is usually going to say that I'm only in college, not graduated, so there. To which I must respond, "Excuse me, but what are you? If you don't have at least two years of straight classes in this shit, that usually makes me more knowledgeable than you."

A real twin has far more insight into the actual relationship between twins than someone who only has traditional siblings. Now, they shouldn't feel victimized because that's just stupid, but I can totally understand the feeling of knowing more than the average joe.

...If that's what you were getting at anyway. I might just be an idiot tonight.

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I understand that, and I do think real twins would probably feel twincest closer to home than normal people. But on the subject of frustration alone, I think if you are offended by twincest on principle, your feeling is legitimate whether or not you yourself are a twin, so if they're frustrated... it's just that, frustration. They shouldn't feel like real live twins as a group are being targeted.

I don't really know what I'm saying at this point either.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-20 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
"Excuse me, but what are you? If you don't have at least two years of straight classes in this shit, that usually makes me more knowledgeable than you."

a typical childish response. once you get a few years on you, you'll see just how cuntastic this comment is.

then again, you're the master at cuntastic so maybe it won't matter to you. after all, this is only online, right? you don't take it NEAR as seriously.

OH HO HO AND MY FAITHFUL ANON RETURNS

I missed you :3

[identity profile] pimmy.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda interpret the secret as just how strongly the poster feels, not exactly what she/he would DO. It is a secret after all.

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Again, didn't bring up the spoon. I'm talking more about the issue of being a twin and hating twincest as a result, which kind of implies the OP is taking it a bit too personally.

[identity profile] pimmy.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
it's hard not to take twincest personally as a twin, atleast to me. I have a tendancy to get excited seeing another set of twins in a series, and I will automatically compare their relationship to me and my sister. So seeing people take that unique relationship as just another "romance" is really bothersome.

but i ramble!

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it's harder when you think people are intentionally misunderstanding the nature of your relationship, and I can respect that. But I also like to think that case by case applies, as in, just because this author wrote this pair of twins in this kind of relationship doesn't mean that he/she thinks this is true for all twins. Like, each story stands alone by itself, and the characters in that story belong to that specific situation.

I'm Asian. I guess I could say, it's the difference between being offended at portrayal of Asian stereotypes in the media and being offended at the portrayal of an Asian in a negative light in a certain film or book. The first case is gross generalization, which is offensive, but in the latter, I don't have any reason to feel that the creator thinks less of Asians as a whole. Similarly, in the Anon's example, finding a picture of huge spiders and being grossed out doesn't mean you should feel, "Damn, this person knows I/people hate spiders and purposely put this here to make me sick, I hate them." (Unless, of course, that is the case.)

[identity profile] pimmy.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, yeah that makes sense. I can see the appeal of it individually, with all the taboo type themes and whatnot. People who ship twincest all the time at every chance are the ones that really bug me. (no offense to them, i guess?) Most other circumstances I tend to be less "eck" about.
I guess really the same sort of thing can apply when you see two characters you love as friends, but find people shipping them all over. To a stronger degree, but yeah. Logic and gut feelings are so hard to balance \(-.-;)>

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
But, people in that fandom tend to enjoy those big ugly spiders. You can't really avoid it

Of course I can avoid it. Using cuts and marking fics for contents is basic etiquette in every fandom I'm in.

Also, I'm squicked by many things (well, OK, not many, but there are a few). I realise that they're simply not my kink, and not something inherently bad, though. Implying that somebody's fandom kink is sick and wrong is incredibly rude.

[identity profile] savioto.livejournal.com 2007-12-20 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I like incest, but I actually agree with you. I like plenty of things that many other people are squicked by, and I accept the fact that most people aren't going to be so accepting of it. True, fiction does not equal reality, but I think that only applies when someone says something like, "you must want to fuck your sister because you write incest." When it's simply "I think incest is gross," saying OMG IT'S JUST FICTION is kind of dumb. I think the issue with the secret is that people are taking the "I want to kill them" part a bit too literally.
