My friend defended it with "well, of course that guy is upset if she slept with five guys while in a relationship with him." Well, okay, that isn't good, but it doesn't excuse the guys sending her DEATH THREATS. Or sending death threats to random females who aren't even her just because they're female.

It is kind of amusing how every time someone goes and says or does something awful and completely fucked up about how women are evil, everyone in the 'movement' immediately starts talking about how that doesn't represent them despite the fact that it is by far the most visible and significant thing their movement has done. And by 'amusing' I mean 'makes me want to laugh so hard that I choke on my own vomit'

People who defend shitty behavior are often shitty. I found this out when there was an assault scandal at my college and aaaaall the victim blamers came out of the woodwork on facebook.

They've pretty much killed all desire I have to be associated with "gamers", despite playing more of them virtually anyone else I know, and have since I was a small child. Ironically, as a well-educated adult female professional, I'm exactly the kind of person whose existence in that group could debunk the stereotype that they're all bitter manbabies living in their mother's basements, but no, no, thanks for confirming that stereotype for me and everyone else in the world forever, guys.

The more social gamers are pretty normal (most of them) but yeah, I can't blame you at all for feeling that way. There are a shit ton of assholes out there unfortunately.

He's not said much about it, other than making a few tweets and retweets about it. So it seems that he thinks it is just bullshit.

I'm ashamed to admit I bought into the "journalistic integrity" lie for a little while. I'd been banging on the "games journalism is a bunch of shills" drum for years and years, ever since a guy was fired when a publisher pulled their ads after he wrote a bad review of a game. So I was easily suckered in. But I realized that not only is it ultimately irrelevant (entertainment journalism of any type is inherently a shill anyway and there's nothing to really be done about it) but in this case it's just a front for a misogynist ultra-tirade by outraged neckbeards, and I don't care how bad some people want to try to label me as one, I am not one of those... things. I'm done with it. I bailed quickly once I saw how ugly things were getting and how much the term has stopped meaning anything to do with journalistic integrity. I know some people are trying to reclaim the hashtag to talk about the topic GG is ostensibly actually about, but I think it's pointless. Let the trogs have it.

Oh I agree about games journalism, and about how GG could have looked legit at first. Especially if you aren't willing to watch shitty hour long videos from some smarmy dude named Internet Aristocrat.

And then you also have people saying it's okay /v/ doesn't hate women look they created Vivian and are supporting that woman game initiative for propaganda reasons *cough people did that here you know who you are cough*

It's the people who are still supporting bullshit I'm on about.

The one good thing about this is that 4chan seems better now that the worst of the assholes went off to their corner.

Oh shit, I was keeping my nuts out of that particular vice. "Live and Let them destroy each other" kinda style.

Then some fucker Doxxed Felicia fucking Day! They made ~~a powerful~~ an ineffectual but raged filled enemy on that day.

I'm just pissed off that this whole GamerGate thing has suddenly turned into 'All gamers are assholes who will harass people out of their homes.' I've seen so many people denounce gamers as a whole, and it makes me sad and upset.

Have you ever noticed that people who introduce themselves as "gamers" tend to be awful or at least annoying more often than not, though? I'm not talking about people who are avid video game players. I'm talking specifically about people who define themselves by the fact that they consume video games.

It's like "foodies." Everyone eats food, plenty of people are really into food, but "foodies" tend to be the people turning up their nose at whatever it is you're having for dinner while they eat fucking "artisan" grilled cheese. They define themselves by the fact that they like good food, and become obnoxious for it.

chard is onto something here. I play games. I love games. My fandoms all revolve around games, my tumblr dash is all related to games, I can talk to people for hours about games and the game industry.

But I don't go around saying "I'm a gamer," and I don't get upset when people go "gamers lol." Because I am so much fucking more than my favorite hobby.

This is how I feel about calling myself a feminist.

That is the fault of no one more than the people within the Gamergate movement.

That's because as this and other examples (like the school shootings of late), prove is that video games are toxic and need to be banned. Forever.

I'm starting to really hate how completely dismissing both sides of an argument has come to stand in for actually forming reasonable opinions on something.
