I think slutty can just mean, "super enthusiastic about sex." I don't even really consider it a bad thing. When I think of someone slutty, I think of someone who has a lot of sex or someone who would really enjoy giving messy, gagging blowjobs.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
You're gonna get dogpiled, but this is the same way I think about it.

Thirding this. Especially the blowjobs part.

Proud slut over here :)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Were they extra uninhibited in the story? Maybe that's what they were refering to.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
So basically, reclaiming slut from a sex-positive point of view?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, slut's more of a mindset.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think a lot of people use the word 'slutty' this way. I also don't think it has a chiefly negative connotation either, tbh. Like saying "Dean was so slutty in that fic!", but not meaning it as something that was bad.

"super enthusiastic about sex."

Then there sure are a lot of Virgin Sluts out there...and I used to be one.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Does this apply to both sexes?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen the word used this way for women too.

I always assumed it meant "super enthusiastic and shameless about sex (and also probably submissive)." That's what it seems to mean in all the slashfics tagged with something like "slutty!CharacterX" that I've read. Remember all the "slutty!Charles" or "slutty!Tony" fic in the X-Men or Avengers fandoms?

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2014-11-02 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, seconding. I haven't actually seen people use the word to indicate a characters' promiscuity. It's always their mindset&behaviour.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-01 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
A slut is a whore who deserves to be stoned. End of story.

[personal profile] quirkytizzy 2014-11-01 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Describing it this way, though, is a little circular. It's like, what's a slut? Well, it's a whore. What's a whore? Well it's a - and so on and so forth until you're defining "is" "a" and "stoned."

Really, it's just not an effective way of defining it.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I think slutty can just mean, "super enthusiastic about sex."

OP here. Thanks for that clarification.

I have never come across that other meaning of the word, and I'm still slightly horrified. No, make that a lot horrified.

I suppose it's nice that the word slut is being reclaimed. But do these people who use slut in this way never think of the misunderstandings this could cause?

Actually, now I think of it, that commenter was being incredibly rude. They must have known the older meaning of the word. Yet to label that character as a slut anyway, directly to the writer's face, without any other explanation, was not very nice of them. Couldn't they have said sometihng like "what a slut, and I mean that in the best way"?

It was a WIP and I fear the writer has abandoned the fic partly because of this comment.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I thought that slut was always about a person who had sex/wanted sex with everyone they came in contact with or like the entire football team or something.
If 'lots of sex' would be described slutty, then that would be most human beings.

I once had a reviewer imply a main character was a slut for sleeping with her in-fic husband, because the husband wasn't the end-game love-interest. I had several other people express their disappointment that the character had slept with people before she even fell for or even *liked* the other main character. It startled me how many people thought that a woman is a "slut" or "unfaithful" because she has sex with anyone aside from her One True Love, even if neither of the characters care for each other yet. I try to comfort myself with the idea that because it's fandom, people want their OTP together and don't like "interference", but that in real life, they'd be more understanding. I hope that's true anyway.

I wish "slut" was reclaimed and redefined like the above reply said. I think for a lot of people though, there's still a huge emphasis on a woman's purity.

...wow.

I hate to, uh, throw a wrench in the spokes of your comfort, but that's the exact attitude that one finds in purity-focused, fundamentalist religious circles. There are girls and boys who are actually raised with the notion that, if they have sex before marriage (or, in some cases, even have feelings for someone other than their future spouse before marriage), then they've been unfaithful.

It's really bizarre to me that there are people in fandom who think that way. I thought it was a bit more a fringe belief than that. :-/

That's not surprising. If you'll notice, it's a common trope in romance novels, where the heroine is a virgin but the heroe's slept around lots. Like a_potato said, it's also an attitude reflected in many conservative religions.

tbh I do think the meaning of that word has shifted a little bit and become less of an insult. But that's what happens with words.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I've associated the word with a person who sleeps with various people regardless if they're in a relationship or not, which is pretty much like cheating.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
What the reviewer meant is that the character acts lascivious or wanton (in the lewd/lustfull sense). It's used in fandom mostly to refer to someone who really, shamelessly, or perhaps obscenely enjoys sex. It usually reflects positively on the character it's used to describe.

People use "slutty" instead of all those others, more accurate words, either because they all sound super pompous or because kids today just have no vocabulary! (just ask any lit teacher).

Note that this means that "slutty", as most of fandom understands it, is shifting in meaning so keep up with the times and enjoy this new positive spin on a word that used to mean something else.

sex education, everyone?
