I don't think the point of any of the seasons of AHS has been to create sympathetic characters. Sometimes they are, but... totally not the goal.

This. If the character isn't a victum, odds are good they are a horrible person. Then it just becomes degrees of black (not grey, black)

AHS is the kind of show you set out to watch with low expectations. Extremely low imo.

I've not watched this season yet, but I don't remember the other seasons having all that many sympathetic characters. First season, there's really only Violet and Addie who remain not-horrible in some way.

AHS likes to make you feel sorry for someone and hate them at the same time.

i thought it was just a drug-fueled orgy, did they actually rape her?

and jimmy has felt a lot of guilt over killing the cop (even though he was threatening them).

the only freak i didn't like was meep, and he's dead now.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
When I watched it it seemed like rape because they drugged her and she had no idea what she was doing.

AHS's goal isn't really to create sympathetic characters. Some can be but almost everyone is awful in some way. Everyone's usually morally gray.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think Angela Bassett's and Kathy Bates characters are pretty sympathetic. I xant stand Dandy tbh. I hope he dies painfully.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
it's funny how they're close this season considering who they played last year

Ugh, good to know. I hadn't started watching this season yet, but I hated the rape stuff last season so bad, I think I'll just pass on this season.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
The rape stuff really isn't that important to the show. I know how that sounds but it really isn't. It isn't a story point or anything. The season has actually been really good, way better than last season. The rape stuff is below...

SPOILER

The woman who runs the Freakshow meets a young woman who is jaded with her life and invites her to check out the Freakshow, where she (off screen) does opium and has an orgy with the freaks. There's a grainy black and white movie going of the orgy and the girl smiling and enjoying herself, but you can't really see anything, just suggestions of sexual acts. The drugs may make it rape (hard to tell from the context, since it happens offscreen) but it isn't uncomfortable to watch or anything. There's a lot about the show that is, but not that so much.

Evil/~morally gray~ disabled people is the worst fucking trope.

I think it says a lot that this shitshow is more ableist than a film from the freaking 1930s. =/

+1

I've actually been surprised by how little I've heard about the ableism of this show.

What does this mean, exactly? Ableist in what way? It's set in the early fifties, so it's not like it's going to be a festival of political correctness or anything.

It's really bad how this group of people who have spent their entire lives being abused, exploited, denied basic human rights, forced to live like animals and be gawked at by the masses or starve and they aren't all happiness and sunshine. Not to mention they all just lived through one of the worst economic events in American history as part of the lowest socioeconomic group. They should all be out picking daisies to lay at the normal people's feet. Everyone knows that oppressed minorities don't have the right to be unhappy about how they are treated and should die rather than struggle to survive. How dare they be just as evil and vile are real folk tend to be.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
They drugged and raped a lady. They don't have to be all sunshine and rainbows, but could they at least not be rapists?

Oppressed people don't always turn into rapists, murders, and abusive assholes though so what is this logic.

And it'd be one thing if a few characters were evil or morally grey, but practically all of them are.

It's also just bad storytelling to not set up the story so the audience can see the oppression as it happens, one of my biggest problems with Freakshow is that in episode 1 the freaks are already being horrible. Maybe we know their life has been bad, but you still need more time to set that up in order to follow the rules of show vs tell.

In real life, most freak show performers were quite proud of being in show business and making a good living. Being able to provide for a family was tough for disabled people, and if you could do it, you felt good about it.

I know it doesn't fit the social narratives we prefer today, but it's historical fact. Look it up. Mat Fraser's done some good work on the subject, and there's a variety of histories and biographies out there. Some fascinating stories, really. Madame Clofullia, Chang and Eng, Captain Bates and Anna Swan...

Never seen AHS but I real like Tod Browning's Freaks. Cool to see it mentioned in a secret, even in passing.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a fan of the show really, but Dandy is a bugfuck nuts spoiled manchild who aspires to be a serial killer. I kind of question your taste.

People read that scene as being rape? Maybe it's just side by side with the Jimmy/housewives scene, but I didn't read rape in it at all. I thought that girl was just dehumanizing the freaks like everyone else.

It's not like I watch this show expecting unicorns and rainbows but jesus the most recent episode was disturbing as fuck. I don't know why since I watch a lot of fucked up stuff, a lot of which is probably more violent/graphic/etc. but something about that episode just really, really bothered me.
