Question for slash/femslash fans

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Imagine (however unlikely that might be) TPTB decided to make one character of your same-sex otp gay or bi in canon and give them a same-sex love interest. Assume the story line is respectful and well written.

How'd that make you feel?

Would that make you happy because even if your otp didn't become canon you at least get representation, or would you feel like you're being mocked by only making one gay/bi and not giving you your otp?

Re: Question for slash/femslash fans

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I'd be happy because there's always fix-it fic in which you can make the other character bi-curious.

Re: Question for slash/femslash fans

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Happy because the potential has been confirmed in canon for at least one character feeling that way for the other. It was never canon anyway.

Re: Question for slash/femslash fans

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I would be pleased to see the representation. I don't generally care whether or not my non-canon OTPs become canon, and I often enjoy whatever their canon relationships are separate from the OTP anyway. I wouldn't feel like I was being mocked, because I don't feel like TPTB owe me the relationships I like best.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
It would depend on how I felt about the new love interest. But if it was respectful and well written, I would be happy about it. First, because at least it makes the OTP closer to being canon. Second, because even if it's not my OTP, I'm still getting a good romance plot with a character I really really like. It's all upside.

I'd be very happy. Don't care if my OTP is ever canon so if one was with someone else, as long as it was written well I'd love it.

There are people who would see mockery in that? This is just such a strange question to me. I can understand people being disappointed about their otp but feeling like they're being mocked?

Who cares about my OTP, that's what fanfic is for. Representation would be great, especially actually well-written representation.

Re: Question for slash/femslash fans

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who really wishes there were more canon gay characters in media, this would make me really happy.

Re: Question for slash/femslash fans

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Happy, because it would cut the "they're totally straight, how can you ship them?????" caterwauling down by at least half. I break up canon pairings in fic all the time, so it really doesn't matter what they make canon.

'Yay representation', of course. Bonus if I think the new canon couple is cute.

Considering my otp is a blind black guy and a robot from an early 90s scifi series, I'll never have this problem. It would be nice though.

Depends on how well-written the overall story is.

Re: Question for slash/femslash fans

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
If it's well-written I would probably be pleased and ship both the options because I'm a multishipper.
While it's always nice to have what you like become canon, I'm used to the contrary and a lot of my ships aren't even popular anyway (I mostly ship femslash) so it really doesn't bother me and just having representation would be pretty nice I think.

Representation matters more than my shipping preferences so I'd be happy, and I could end up really liking the canon pair as well.

I don't understand why that would be "being mocked."

I don't understand the mindset of some fans. Like, if Stiles on Teen Wolf was revealed to be bi, and he got a new love interest.. fans would consider that being mocked? Wouldn't that be fantastic? I seriously don't get it.

I have lots of slash OTPs and I'd be plenty satisfied with only one of them being queer with another love interest. I'd be thrilled because I love seeing gay relationships on TV.

On one hand, I'd be disappointed it wasn't my ship, on the other hand relieved because I would worry they'd screw it up in canon. Also representation is awesome, so that would be a plus.

Tbh I'd probably be a tiny bit disappointed for like 30 seconds (although I think feeling like you're being mocked is kind of a strange reaction) but then I'd get over it. Representation is good and like an anon above said, your OTP was never canon anyway. Plus if it was well written and the actors had chemistry, there's a good chance I'd end up being a fan of the new pairing.

Also, I'd enjoy watching the homophobes freak out. (Does that make me a bad person? lol)

I'd probably be excited. Having it be a character in one of my ships has something to do with that, because that's still going to fuel fanworks and have people go, "It's got a shot! It's got a chance of happening now! ♥" I might be a bit wary of the new character, particularly if their role is strictly love interest, but still hopeful.

Mocked though? Nah. I'd have to be a batshit shipper for that.

Re: Question for slash/femslash fans

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
If it was treated respectfully then it'd be great. Like others have said, it'd actually make the OTP more of a possibility, not less.

On the more negative side, I wouldn't feel mocked, but I could feel manipulated/patronized depending on how it was done. If the OTP was well-known as being popular and was one of those ships that got a lot of queerbaiting beforehand, and this move was a clear attempt to nix the popularity of the OTP by bringing in some other canon love interest (especially if the other half of the OTP got a het love interest at the same time/the gay love interest was only brought in as an afterthought to the het love interest and so on...) then I'd be pretty irritated.

I'd be cool with it, but then I'm not an OTP shipper in the truest sense of the term. I don't care who my favorite characters fuck in canon so long as they get the treatment I feel they deserve (whether good or ill). Plus, more well-written non-straight characters are always awesome.

I'd be pretty glad because representation, let alone good representation that isn't treated as a (rape) joke is almost impossible to find.

Also I'd make them canon in fics so there's that.

If it's well written, and believably in character, and doesn't bring everything about the involved characters respective plotlines to a grinding halt, I'd accept it. I'd still ship whatever my OTP was, but I wouldn't be one of those obnoxious ~it's really canon~ shippers.

Depends on the ship - but, it seems at this point I'm on team "bi Captain America for the masses",even though I'm not that loud about it as I steer clear of the fanatic fringes.

There's OTP's I fully don' expect to become canon, though, so what the do in canon will not change much. Since canon often has too few LBGT characters anyway, I'd be guessing it would be an interesting regardless of who they're shipped with.

Re: Question for slash/femslash fans

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm gay and all for more representation but I'd be pissed. I don't think I'd feel like the writers were "mocking" me, but it depends on the pairing and the dynamic. If it came across as a clear "lol no homo" (for the other chara) by intentionally breaking up a pairing... I guess I might wonder if it was intended to hurt fans?

I'd be so pissed though, lmao.
