I feel the same way about Ronan/Ronon Dex

It's very easy to find the correct spelling of characters' names, and you're an idiot if you don't do it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a bit of sympathy for that one, because I'd posted TWO fics before I realised that Word was autocorrecting Ronon to Ronan. ARGH. (There were only minor mentions of him in both fics, and neither me nor my beta caught it.)

It's Cas not Cass and I don't care what anybody says. His name is CAStiel not CASStiel ffs.

Agreed!

I have a memory of The Supernatural writers saying at some point that it is Cass, or that was how it was written down on a piece of paper in an episode or something? I don't remember, but I am quite sure it is some form of Canon.

Even worse is when it's a book fandom. THEIR NAMES ARE SPELLED RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE FFS

+1

Although my Spanish-speaking brain still gets warped around the canonical pronunciation of "Jaime" as "Jamie." Especially as I've got a cousin named Jaime.

+2

I can cut some slack for movie, tv, podcast, and other audio-based fandoms for not getting the correct spelling right. I feel like there's no excuse to misspell a name from a book fandom because, as you said, the name is RIGHT THERE.

I dunno, renaming characters just for the fun of it is pretty much in the spirit of NuBattlestar canon. It is very meta.

It sometimes drives me crazy, too, but I have a certain amount of sympathy, also.

You know how sometimes you have a word you just can't remember how to spell? For me, it's seperate. Oops, separate. I know I misspell it a lot, and I know it's one of those two, and you'd think I could remember, but I still only get it right the first time about a third of the time.

Some people have it worse, and are just sort of... spelling-blind, I guess.

I'm guilty of this, I never wrote fic for BSG or anything but if I was ever writing or typing her name there was always a 50/50 chance that I'd spell it Roslyn instead. It's apparently just one of those words that my brain messes up really easily.

Erika instead of Erica (Teen Wolf) annoys me.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-08 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I have some sympathy though because, sometimes, in the beginning especially, some information has conflicting information (like closed captioning, network/show websites, imdb) and sometimes the creators/writers themselves have a hard time settling on spelling.

But, Jesus, if you use AO3 and you tag the character (with the correct spelling), I'm going to wonder what the hell you're thinking.

YES. If you misspell someone's name in a fic more than once so I can be fairly certain it wasn't a typo, I will stop reading your fic.

Totally with you on this one. Though I almost did it myself recently, in a Dragon Age fic that spelled a name as Isabella instead of Isabela. Not a huge mistake, I suppose, but I fixed it as soon as I realized I'd made it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I T A.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Completely and utterly agreed. Especially with the utterly simple names (It's WILL Riker, not WIL Riker you idiots!)

I just can't use some of Togashi's official spellings, sorry.
