So yesterday's secret #1 discussed how Kirk/Spock in the reboots didn't work for the OP and relied too heavily on TOS (something which I happen to agree with).

I noted in the comments section that it's true that Kirk and Spock are relying too much on the TOS but this actually works in their favor (in my opinion) since Spock/Uhura (a relationship written completely by the reboot writers) was so incompetently handled -- again, in my opinion.

There was back and forth discussion about it and I thought it was interesting, with people sharing their perspectives and how they approached the writing.

But apparently sharing my opinion on the topic means I'm "trying so hard" and I'm being petty and immature with "stupid" points. And…I just don't understand what's so wrong with having a back and forth discussion on it?

If you don't want to talk then that's fine -- I said we could agree to disagree -- but why is sharing my opinion in the comments section "wrong"? Is it because I brought up another pairing?

I didn't call anyone names or try to assert my opinion as factual so I don't understand why people seemed so upset.

Isn't the purpose of the comments section to share our opinions?

…But why not? It's not like you can have in-depth back and forth discussion on tumblr (given how it's built).

As long as I'm not insulting anyone or saying my opinion is fact, why is it such a big deal?

I loved doing this kind of stuff when talking about Star Wars and I had lots of great back and forth discussions on forums.

You can have in-dept back and forth discussions on Star Trek and that wouldn't be wanky! I'm sure lots of people here would love to talk about it. That's great! And as long as you're not saying your opinion is fact that wouldn't be a big deal. You can totally have that here.

Unfortunately what you did in just now was not to have a discussion but to wank about a discussion, by which I mean 'hey guys some other people called me petty I don't like them hey agree with me are you listening validate my feelings' which is... not really about fandom.

Talking about fandom isn't a big deal and is fine. Talking about people who are being stupid in fandom!!! Who don't like me!!! Guys LOOK at all the stupids! is kind of petty, though, yeah.

I would say the mature, intelligent way to deal with that is to ignore people who take arguments about movies personally and not bring it up again the very next day.

I just wanted to know because I really enjoy discussions on FS but…is it just not the place to do it? Is the etiquette just to roll with the OP?

Did you really want to know if sharing an opinion on FS was bad behavior? Or did you want validation that the people taking it personally were petty and immature?

It sounds like the latter.

Exactly the reason why I read the thread and didn't even bother with the OP of this post (the one playing the victim here, not the op of the secret)

Firstly, kudos on trying to keep the wank train going. It's stupid wank, but I admire your dedication.

Secondly, yes, the purpose of the comment section is to share opinions. You shared your opinion about the secret and about Spock/Uhura and people shared their opinions about your views. They may not have been kind about it, but opinions don't need to be.

I wasn't really asking about them though. I was asking about me (yeah…kind of self-centered there!). I wanted to know if *I* was being petty and immature. Because one of the things I like about FS is that we actually can have long back and forth discussions in the comments sections, which is something I've really missed since Tumblr took off.

But if it's not kosher, well, I suppose I can try to find somewhere else.

FS is like everywhere else on the Internet: when people can't form a convincing argument, they resort to insults. You can ignore them, or egg them on. Your choice.

Some good counter-arguments were made, though. No insults are being thrown around..but I can't blame anyone for giving up fighting with a wall of text saying "my ship is mo betta' than yours".

You brought up the topic of Spock/Kirk vs Spock/Uhura, a notoriously wanky topic in reboot fandom. As a result, you got a few dismissive replies - probably from people either who are invested in the wank so had a knee-jerk reaction, or people who thought you were commenting with wank bait. It isn't about F!S, it's about fandom. It happens, don't angst about it, just move on and continue to have the discussion you want to have with people who are willing to have it.

It seems like you're taking this in a really weird all-or-nothing kind of way, whether either everyone is polite in a discussion with you or EVERYTHING IS RUINED WE CANNOT HAVE DISCUSSIONS AT ALL ANYMORE AHHH if even just one person gets irrationally butthurt.

I read through that thread. You had some good back-and-forth with a few people. So obviously, it's still acceptable and possible to have discussions here. You shouldn't be letting the words of some people who weren't up for having a discussion make you think this isn't the place to have it at all, because that's silly (and...kinda petty).

Saying that your multiple comments are petty shipper wars is not an insult or bullying you out of the discussion. It's ppl paying attention to the fact that you didn't like that the secret criticized your ship so you derailed the topic bashing your rival ship and taking it very seriously. You replied to every single person who disagreed with you or just said that they like that ship, in a way that feels like you want to convince them that or make sure you get the last word.

You are a hypocrite now making it seems you can't share your opinions when you are the one who wrote her opinion the most in the while frigging thread.
