.... how does anyone think those weird, crusty, reptile-looking creatures are SEXY? I can see thinking they're cool from the picture, but I don't want to fuck lizards.

I don't but I know others who do and I get it. Watch the show and then you'll get it. They are charismatic and manipulative as anything. Like Fallen Angels charming.

Welcome to DS9 fandom.

Eh, lots of people think unusual characters of fictional races are attractive. (Look at Mass Effect fandom, and so many other fantasy and sci-fi fandoms. Hell, if someone had told me a decade ago, "You're going to think a reptile dude is fuckable" I would've went, "The hell?!", but then Thane Krios happened. *shrugs*)

You clearly have never encountered a Dukat fangirl.

It's not physical so much. They have so much power and charisma. They're so smart and they're always plotting and scheming. They're really just a very, very attractive race.
mekkio: (Default)

[personal profile] mekkio 2014-11-12 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Look they are "cool" because they are great villains. They are probably the most interesting villains in all of Star Trek canon. Even the "good ones" of them like Garek, you can't trust as far as you can throw him. And that's what people gravitate toward. They are fascinating to watch. You never know where you stand with them. They can call you friend to your face, charm you, say I love you, all the while they are about to stab you in the back with a knife. Literally and figuratively.

They are my favorite aliens in Star Trek for this very reason. They are a puzzle on legs.

[personal profile] thelonebamf 2014-11-12 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in the same boat. They're my favorite alien race. This doesn't mean I think they're admirable or I'd want to be a part of their society, but they *made* DS9 what it was.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
My favorite was always the Romulans, because they didn't have the cheesy ingratiating thing of the Cardassians, but they were just as sneaky, and CRAZY smart. I dig smart villains.

That hasn't really been my experience? I feel like most people in fandom are fairly aware that the Cardassians as a political entity are pretty awful, and that Dukat is completely evil, as much as Cardassians and Dukat are also fascinating. Like, Cardassians are interesting and cool. I can think that and also recognize that the occupation was fucked up.

And on the other hand, that doesn't mean that all Cardassians as a race are evil, ofc, and I don't think Garak is anywhere near the same category as Dukat.
mekkio: (Default)

[personal profile] mekkio 2014-11-12 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think subby is upset that people are interested in Cardassians at all. Like, "How could anyone like them?" in the same way people like The Joker or Hannibal, when they are just as evil. It's because they are interesting. Simple as that.

I had to get out of the DS9_rewatch chats because of the people going on and on about the super sexy Space Nazis. Vomit. If anything, they're more like Space British Empire anyway.

People can find the Cardassians interesting without going down that road, and I'm glad that you have found other people who do! There is quite a bit of good fic out there, and the show was very careful to make "evil race" WAY more complex than it looked when the show began.

Whatever. I love Dukat.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
I like Dukat. The actor has an amazing voice that just gets to me.

However, me finding something sexy =/= me approving of actions of said sexy person. All of which are fictional, anyway. So what's the problem?

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying you're not allowed to like the Cardassians. (Garak is pretty much my favorite Star Trek character ever, I'm not going to lie.) It just bothers me how fandom kind of ignores the fact that they were pretty much like space Nazis. I see so many comments like "I wish I lived on Terok Nor." You want to live on a station that had Bajoran slave labour and Bajorans lying around on the Promenade, half dead from being overworked? :/

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
As long as I'm not a Bajoran, I'm good.

Its hardly to say all Cardassians are cruel racists out to do down the poor Bajorans, though Dukat certainly was. We saw many positive and even heroic examples throughout the series. I will admit though that they were all committed to carrying out needlessly complex plans, and complexity is kinda hot. Also, they chose kickass voice actors for pretty much all the roles, so even more than physical looks they had soul shivering vocal performances. Cardassians, by the time DS9 got done, were probably the most fully realized alien race in the Trek-verse. That is always a source of fascination for fans.

In my experience while there are some fans like that (though they're not as bad as the people who go on about how the Cardassians were right), there's plenty of intelligent discussion and fic, especially about Garak. But when people aren't real and you know they're not real is it actually morally wrong to find them attractive? (I don't, voices aside.)
