I honestly don't get how you can even get through the first season thinking she's a nice person.

The only way I could see her being a favourite is if you like villains.

I didn't start watching until it was well into season 2. And I had friends who were fans of her. So I was colored by being told about her redemption.

Mostly, though, I was colored by the adoption angle of season 1. My younger brother was adopted, so I felt really uncomfortable with the blood=real family angle of season 1. On this time around, though, I've realized that Regina was shitty and abusive and however badly that angle was handled, she's still a bad parent.

Yeah, I sort of hate how the adoption part was played out.

I mean, from the perspective of S1 Emma, who does not believe Henry's story first, it's absolutely nuts that she just waltzes in and undermines Regina's authority and parenting after Henry had been her son all his life.

(I mean, WE know she's an Evil Queen, but Emma doesn't, and it's really handled poorly if you assume it would be a real life setting).

But the thing is, both regarding her parenting with Henry and her own tragic backstory: it can make your actions a bit come understandable, but that doesn't mean that you still aren't a shitty person.

Because, you know, some people have bad shit happen to them without turning murderous...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
They way they handled it post S1 only reinforced the blood is everything and adoptive parents are inherently bad message.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree. They show three adoptive relationships in a positive light (Geppetto/ Pinocchio, Spinsters/ Rumplestiltskin, and George/ James). The only negative adoptive relationship is Regina/ Henry. That's only natural since Regina is- you know- EVIL.

On the other hand, most of the biological parents with the exception of Charming, Emma, Eva and Leopold, Colette, and Charming's mom, really really suck.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
No, no, I really disagree.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to like villains. They always have a better backstory then the good guys and are more interesting. I am the type of person who roots for the monster during a horror movie so I guess that explains why I like her.

Oh, I get liking villains.

I just don't get not seeing them as vllains when they clearly are - if that makes sense?

But the way I read the secret OP didn't see her as such until he changed perspective and can't unsee it now. And that seems to imply their flist see Regina that way as well. Which I find weird and frankly a bit disconcerting.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I saw her as a villain, just as a redeemable and reformed one. I downplayed her actions in my mind. Now, while I don't think that redemption is impossible, I don't think she (or any of the "reformed" villains on the show) has earned it yet.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
This sure is a popular image for Regina secrets.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I hate her.

And why I ultimately gave up the show when they tried to make her, eh, not so bad.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
This again? Who has the "careful with that wank" gif?

We get it, we get it. You hate the character. That is fine. You hating on people for not also hating on her, not so fine.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Er, the OP didn't say anything about hating on people who don't hate her.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
That seems the subtext based on the way it is worded, and that is always where the OP has gone before with these secrets. They just want to stoke that wank, again.

Uh, I've never made a Regina secret here before. I liked her before.

I think I might be the only person who didn't care about Graham. Then again, I found it hard to care about bad things happening to anyone on this show because the show itself was just so bad.

I love how people are unwilling to forgive Rumple for whatever he's done but they have no problem with Regina being a rapist.

I love her, but you have to be able to apply an illogically fantastical bullshit code of ethics to enjoy this show in general. For me it's all set within a fable about how it's possible for people to change, but just as there's magic and monsters, the scope of possible redemption is kind of allegorically larger than life too.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
The problem with Regina's redemption arc isn't so much its possibility - within the fairytale framework, it's certainly possible - it's whether or not she's even really begun to earn it. She still sees herself as a victim most of the time, and doesn't really acknowledge that she's the architect of a lot of her own misery, let alone that she seriously hurt a hell of a lot of people and was inarguably wrong for it.

She can be an interesting character without making that acknowledgment, but she can't really be redeemed without it, and the show trying to tell us otherwise is getting really grating.

I'm not sure we're supposed to believe it's earned yet, though I should probably point out I haven't watched any S4. But it seems to me she never does stop running into people who have reason to still hate her and nobody's portrayed as in the wrong for continuing to distrust her. I would like to see her acknowledge the beds she's made more often but her arc is probably incomplete at this point and I think it would feel too easy if she was any good at being good from the start.

I can't like someone who rapes a man for decades, then kills him when he wants to be gree and murders a man to steal his child from him. Like, what the fuck? I don't care how much shmoopy redemption she gets, Regina will always be a horrid piece of shit.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Do you not believe redemption is possible?

I believe in redemption and that it is possible for anyone. The show hasn't given it to us since she hasn't acknowledged her wrongs, made amends, or really worked much at trying to be better. But were it to be actually well written, I think she could conceivably be redeemed.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
da

For decades of horrible shit like rape and mass murder? Not really.

Regina didn't do one bad thing. She didn't do a few bad things. She has a persistent pattern of being a thoroughly despicable person spanning something to the tune of 40 years. There's a point at which change, let alone redemption, isn't remotely believable, and she (and most of Once's villains for that matter) passed it a long time ago.
