What's a controversy that you're interested in but haven't yet formed an opinion on?

Do you ever run across a controversy that you are drawn to wanting an opinion about, and even become invested in... but you just aren't sure which side you're on? Share here!

My most recent: The Sainsbury's 2014 Christmas advert. The sweet, heartwarming one about the WW1 1914 Christmas Truce... which also is set in, you know, a horribly brutal, terrible time in human history of trench warfare and probably shouldn't be tweaked down to one sweet moment in order to sell chocolate bars. But still, knowing it was possibly skeavy and in bad taste, it made me tear up.

the dysphoria discussion re: transsexualism/"truscum".

Re: What's a controversy that you're interested in but haven't yet formed an opinion on?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, my problem with "truscum" is that they don't find nonbinary genders legitimate and they are against people who don't want to transition for whatever reason. On the other hand, I DO think you need some kind of "dysphoria" with your gender assigned at birth whether it be physical and/or mental in order to be trans. I keep seeing people on tumblr say you don't need dysphoria to be trans which is nonsensical to me bc wouldn't you just be cis if you were comfortable with your assigned gender?

Re: What's a controversy that you're interested in but haven't yet formed an opinion on?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I see an awful lot of "you can choose to be trans!" lately, which...absolutely rubs me the wrong way. But on the same note, I don't like the idea that there's no grey area between two extremes.

yeah, I can buy "gender is bullshit, so I put ? as my gender" without dysphoria as being "beyond" gender and therefore agender and trans... but then you can just as well be cis while acknowledging that they're empty norms, instead of "choosing" to be trans.
Or somebody can have temporary dysphoria without being trans.

if these "trans without having dysphoria" labels were more of a "self-aware" performance of fucking with gendernorms it would make more sense to me, but many will earnestly identify with just another gender label. But I don't want to be that asshole who tells people what they can or can't identify with.

I deleted my original comment for being unfair.

The idea seems to be "Let's yell at people who think they're trans!" But I never claim to be trans. I'm not male, and that's all I'm ever going to say on the subject. I will never stop saying that, no matter how often I get yelled at, and I don't see how I'm causing any harm to trans people when I'm not even saying I'm a trans person.

Prayer in schools, because I tend to only hear extreme scenarios - exhibit A, kid gets into trouble for praying at lunch. Exhibit B, teacher forces kids to pray before class. I think both scenarios are wrong when they happen for real, but I feel like they're pushed as more typical than they really are. I think the issue is more complicated than that.

I feel like the whole issue is adult-controlled and adult-manufactured. If a kid wants to pray or not, that should be up to the kid. (Provided they're not being disruptive, of course.)

Yeah that's a good one. While I would have fucking hated to have to wear a skirt to school, there was so much clothing and fashion-related bullying that it was appalling. I know at least one of the Catholic schools in my area gives girls a pants option (albeit tighter and flared) so that seems okay.

Otoh, people who went to schools with uniforms have told me that there was just as much bullying, but over shit like accessories and phones and hair and whatnot.

Otoh again, not having to worry about what you wear in the morning is pretty A+++. I worked in one lab where the uniform was some hideous pit crew ensemble but I didn't care because fuck it, no work clothes.

Did some quick digging. Found a researcher who seems to be reliable who says uniforms don't have much effect, based on a meta-analysis of 100 studies. (He notes some studies that say otherwise, but says they were mostly funded by companies that sell school uniforms.)

This is just a start, so feel free to throw studies at me if you've got 'em.

Where and why is this a controversy? Where I'm from (latin america) every school requires an uniform, public or private. I can't think of a less important thing to be concerned with...

Re: What's a controversy that you're interested in but haven't yet formed an opinion on?

It's a controversy in much of the US because a certain amount of competition, bullying and exclusion in schools centers around the clothes students wear, with those whose parents can afford the latest expensive fad lording it over those who come to school in stuff their folks bought at garage sales. The idea is that having uniforms will obviate all that. And also, I think, because some people think it would enhance discipline to have everyone dressed alike and to reduce opportunities for personal expression. There are studies supporting both points of view, I think.

Animal rights/vegetarianism

I feel like there are some clear arguments for animal rights and to be a vegetarian. On the other hand PETA is awful. And also, selfishly, I really like meat and seafood and I can't imagine being able to give it up. Which I feel bad about.

Re: What's a controversy that you're interested in but haven't yet formed an opinion on?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, a lot of animal rights activists - myself included - also think PETA is awful.

Re: What's a controversy that you're interested in but haven't yet formed an opinion on?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Second. PETA is the damn worst.

Re: What's a controversy that you're interested in but haven't yet formed an opinion on?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Same, I keep going in circles about it. Especially since it's an equally valid point that being a vegetarian also heavily relies on dangerous and underpaid migrant work, which is...I mean, it's not my intention to place an animal's rights above a human's, but that is how I feel it comes off. The entire food industry is messed up, really, and I'm not sure that there's truly a world-conscious, ethical answer to it.

Re: What's a controversy that you're interested in but haven't yet formed an opinion on?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Vegetarian foods (a much bigger category than people like to pretend, btw) are hardly the only thing made by exploiting human labor, so that reason really, really seems cherry picked to get back at extreme vegetarians/vegans. You are not lessening human suffering by eating burgers, get over yourselves.

Re: What's a controversy that you're interested in but haven't yet formed an opinion on?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
If you're concerned about migrant workers and dangers to employees, maybe try supporting your local farmer's market or growing some of your own stuff. I realize that might not be achievable for everyone due to time or financial restraints, but some vegans are also concerned about those issues and have come up with alternatives.

If you're saying that vegetarian-friendly foods like fruits/vegetables/pasta/rice/etc. are reliant on 'dangerous and underpaid migrant work', then uh, non-vegetarians also consume those in huge quantities. So unless you eat nothing but meat, you won't save those workers much trouble.

Re: What's a controversy that you're interested in but haven't yet formed an opinion on?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
But... how is not being a vegetarian privileging human rights above animal rights? I'm with you on there being no clear cut 100% ethical choices in today's food industry, but being vegetarian is hardly *less* ethical than not being vegetarian. You're buying into the system of human suffering regardless, sorry to say, so why not at least limit animal suffering while you're at it?

I just don't get this whole argument, to be honest (not targeted at you! I've heard it from lots of people). It's like saying "Well, I can't be 100% perfect, so I might as well not try at all." There are shades of grey-- life's all about making ethical compromises. I'm a vegetarian who still consumes dairy products, and I own some inherited fur. Clearly, I'm not perfect, but I don't see why that should mean I shouldn't still strive for making the more ethical choice when I can.

Anyways! Sorry for the long post-- it really isn't targeted at you, you just got me thinking. (And I genuinely don't care if people are vegetarians-- I don't think it makes one a worse or a better person in itself, I just also don't understand/buy the argument you posed.)

As someone who is passionate about animal rights and welfare, it makes me very sad that PETA is still seen as the default, and basically scares people away from caring about animals.

I'm vegetarian myself, for environmental as well as animal rights reasons (very anti-factory farming) but I'm not morally against meat, per se. If you don't want to become a vegetarian, there are absolutely compromises. Buy grass-fed and cage-free beef, for example? It can be a little more expensive, but it absolutely makes a statement. Or consider reducing the amount of meat you eat - even going vegetarian for one day can reduce your carbon footprint.

So yeah, responsible consumerism is possible even if you don't become vegetarian.
