Re: Characters Unfairly Treated Like "Canon OCs" in your fandom?

That is such a stupid fucking oxymoronic term. Whoever came up with it needs to be forbidden from consuming media because they're obviously too fucking stupid to handle it.

Agreed. I came into this thread strictly to see wtf that term is even supposed to mean.

Well, Tauriel could literally be considered a Canon OC - meaning an OC for the book!verse, but canon nonetheless in the movie!verse?

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
If I had to guess, I'd say that it came from basically someone trying to "other" a particular character they didn't like. Sorta like discontinuity on a particular character instead of an episode/book. "This character isn't doesn't even "count" they might as well be like someone's OC in the canon".

IA that it's dumb. Sorry people, but your "unfave" IS actually apart of the canon.

ADDITION

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless they're referring to a character created and added like the anon above mentioned. I believe that's a more right use of the term. And depending how it's pulled off, it doesn't have to be a bad thing. If the character added is good then who cares?

Only if you are desperately trying to cling to the idea that OC hasn't become synonymous with Mary Sue Wish Fulfilment Character. If you are though, I can see why you might be confused. However, in the words of Idina Menzel, "Let It Go" because that battle has been lost.

Only ignorant ,judgey assholes who already hate most OCs think automatically "OC= Mary Sue", IMO.

And when they do, I just sorta laugh at them.

The reason that a lot of people in fandom would use 'OC' a a pejorative is probably not because they assume all OCs to be self insert characters. But because in fandom it's a'foreign element' a lot of people (not all but lot) are in it for their love of the canon and it's characters. Using the term "Canon OC" to insult a character implies that the character "does not belong here" There are plenty of people who don't read OCs in fanfic but are happy to read about them in original fic

I don't think your statement that the majority of people see OC and immediately assume it's the same as "wish fulfillment character is correct. Certainly there are some but I don't think it's as prevalent as you assume
