FYI, the fandom is Tolkien, specifically the Silmarillion. That particular scene is Fingon rescuing his cousin, Maedhros, who was tortured by Morgoth and then hung on a mountain cliff by one hand. And it says a lot about the relationship that none of Maedhros' brothers tried to rescue him, just his cousin.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-20 02:19 am (UTC)(link)I don't know who the second set of cousins are but I think that Maedhros and Fingon had a lot to connect them. They're both the oldest children of a bunch of kids. They both have to deal with the Feanor/Fingolfin drama. They're both Noldor princes. And they seem to like a lot of the same stuff (hunting?) and are both leaders/adventurous. By that same token, Curufin and Celegorm were BFFs over any of their cousins. It's just a matter of personality, etc. Maybe you just don't have that with your cousins?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-20 02:21 am (UTC)(link)People in fiction have amazing bonds with cousins, siblings, parents, classmates, roommates, arranged marriage spouses, cellmates, crewmates, people they happen to be chased by a dragon with, and every other kind of non-chosen relationship imaginable. It doesn't mean every real life example of those relationships will or should have the same bond.
Unless there's some additional reason to compare you and your cousins to Maedhros and Fingon (or vice versa), I don't see the relevance?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-20 02:26 am (UTC)(link)Is it unusual to be distant from your cousins? I honestly don't know because I'm in a weird set of circumstances with mine. I'm the youngest of the youngest of eight, so you know how many years difference there is between me and my oldest cousin? 45 years. The average age of my cousins? 25 years older than me. It's not conducive to tight, family bonds is what I'm saying.
So is this a normal in a abnormal set of circumstances or is it really odd to not be close to your cousins?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-20 02:40 am (UTC)(link)I'm not close to mine. I hardly remember what they look like, and obviously the same is true for them since one of them messaged me on a dating site. I only recognized him by his name and location.
