You know, 3 asian characters, one latino and one african american ain't that bad.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
When the characters in the source material were ALL Asian characters, it kind of is. (Not to mention of those characters is fridged in the first act).

And heck they even had to give the Asian protagonist a hot white aunt. Ugh.

Wasn't the source material pretty racist anyway?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
So? How is that an excuse for cutting down the number of Asian characters when Asians are already grossly underrepresented in the media?

What about latinos and african americans?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Compared to Asians? Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Latinos are underrepresented.

African Americans are overrrepresented. Males definitely are. Females (as a percentage of female characters) are as well -- although in total they're underrepresented because women in general are. At least if you go by US population statistics.

I haven't seen this yet. Did they actually make the Ainu guy white?

(Also is the black guy American? I thought they were all from Japan.)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah the Ainu guy is white.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-23 10:15 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, Ainu as a race was not "East Asian" - they were completely distinct, in fact, some scholars suggest they were more "white". Past tense used because today most Ainu are mixed so do look pretty East Asian.

Can't speak for black people, but while latin american representation is nice, it's not when it comes at the expense of another minority.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-23 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
The comic is about Japanese characters and takes place in Japan. Japanese people aren't a minority in their own country, so the characters don't count as minority representation except for the Ainu. And I assure you Japanese people don't give a flying fuck about representation in foreign media. Nobody is losing here.

If we had enough representation across the board, this wouldn't be an issue. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you, it's just something people seem to be missing.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, mixed raced families are TOTALLY overrated... :\

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no, the movie made efforts to be more accessible to audiences like black people and Latin American people, that's so terrible!

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, too bad they had to do it at the expense of what were supposed to be Asian characters.

As opposed to, you know, adding minorities to all-white movies like Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph or Frozen, right?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the fact that they didn't do it in the past means you have to tear down the movie where they actually do it.

The concept of a multicultural city seems to be sailing right over your head. Just because the characters aren't white doesn't mean they're exempt from including others.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact that they didn't do it in the past is relevant because they only felt the need to do it when the source material called for an all Asian cast. Is that going over your head? They didn't trust audiences to watch a film about Asians.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Kids need to see characters that look like them and share their background. Always having to relate just based on personality isn't enough."

[this movie comes out]

"BAAAWWWW BUT WHY CAN'T AMERICAN KIDS RELATE TO JAPANESE CHARACTERS???!!!"

If they didn't trust audiences to watch a film about Asians, they would have...cut out all the Asians.

There's still Asian characters there, in a predominantly Asian setting. Sorry, but I just can't get on board with this manufactured outrage over black and Latino people being included alongside Asians.

I always saw Vanellope as Asian since her game was essentially an import from Japan. And as for any "but she doesn't have 'Asian' eyes" arguments, it's the whole face of the other thing with why people who aren't into the genre ask why all the characters in manga/anime are "white" because they don't "look Asian."

(Anonymous) 2014-11-22 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
If Vanellope was Asian, someone involved would have said as much.

Oh crap, not this fucking shit again.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-08 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the comics were basically caricatures of Japanese people based not on Japanese culture or people, but on the most mainstream Anime available. There's a reason Disney didn't want Marvel reissuing the comics, they're actually kinda offensive.
