New idea for an AU fanfic: a mall store on Black Friday. Let's see the Avengers handle that madness.

I never knew I needed something to happen so much.
Please, please, please someone write this.

I, uh. I'm actually writing this. Well, my girlfriend and I. It's general MCU but it's an AU where everyone works in the mall and we're working on the Black Friday chapter right now.

I actually really do not understand the point of service industry AUs. At all. High school AUs and Hollywood AUs I get, even if I don't like them. Sci-fi AUs I get, and I like some of them. Fairy tale AUs I get, and love. But service industry AUs??? Why???? What the hell is the point???? Seriously, can someone explain this to me?

Yeah, same. I man, I read some coffee shop ones that were cutely written but still...:why. I read my fiction for escapism, not realism.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm considering doing an AU femslash fic set in a pastry shop during the French Revolution. There will also be identical triplets.

Would that do?

They just want to write something light-hearted?
They're going with what they are familiar with?
Everyone else is doing it?
Really absurd and hilarious things can happen when you work in those kind of places, and they want to write about that? Like when I worked in the bar my parents owned, and the volunteer fire department was in there for lunch except for one guy when a call came in about a vehicle on fire. They decided the one guy who wasn't there could handle it, but it turned out the vehicle on fire was his truck. He was the one who called the FD in the first place.

I've never actually read a service industry AU so I don't what tends to happen in them.

Because it's an AU idea that, generally speaking, requires very little research and is something the post-high school crowd is familiar with. It's easy to write and generally fluffy to read.

I wondered this as well. I don't get the appeal.

It's relatable.

As much as I love Party Down - and it's a fantastic show - I don't think it's nearly as comfy as your bakeries and coffee shops. And since comfiness seems to be the main attribute people are looking for in that kind of thing...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
More types of mundane AUs in general! (I'm not a fan of sci fi or fantasy AUs for mundane canons or rpf.)

I always figured the coffee shop AUs were popular because there's a lot of young people writing them work/ed in a coffee shop, or even just spent a lot of time in them. Kind of like how there's a lot of highschool AU, yeah (and, somewhat in turn, office AU)? And bakeries are kind of kawaii or something because bakery food is attractive as a setting (tbh idgi for fic).

But hell yeah I want more workplaces popping up as the central thing! Give me the construction workers especially! Maybe even flight attendant AU because then you get to have cameos of weirdo passengers in the background of the work drama. And what about game store worker AU? That could be such a parody of webcomics, or stupidly earnest ♥ yeah i kind of just like aus period i'm sorry

I think there is a catering one for Teen Wolf. I don't have a link, though.

I also read one that revolved around an Apple store, which I'd never come across before.

I guess it's both entertainment and service, but I've been on the lookout for a Medieval Times AU in any of my fandoms for a while.

Cater waiter AU you say?

Well, it's not an AU, it's actually Peter Parker supplementing his income, but here you go! Marvel movies 'verse before there an MCU.

I looked up Cater too, but apparently, a lot of people misspell Sam Carter (Stargate).

There are other service industry AUs out there. Off the top of my head, I can think of a couple of handyman ones, landscapers, computer techies/tech support, cashiers, mechanics, etc.
