condoms

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
so ive been with the same guy for the past couple of months, and like 9/10 times the condom breaks when we're having sex. we're both a little rough, but i always make sure the condoms are put on correctly and i use a lot of lube. could it be a brand thing? does this happen to anybody here frequently? what brands are more durable that youd recommend?

Re: condoms

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they're not the right size?

Re: condoms

(Anonymous) 2014-11-27 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
maybe? i was hesitant to think so bc ike i said elsewhere the person im with isnt big. id say average size, so i just assumed the condoms were a good fit. i guess they do seem a little tightish on him but hes never complained and they didnt seem so tight that it would cause them to break. but of all the possibilities i guess thats the most likely.

Usually it's loose that causes the problem, actually, unless he's stretching them to a ludicrous degree which doesn't seem to be the case. How old are the condoms? How are they transported? Keeping them in pants pocket or wallet could wear them down a bit. It might be time to change brands otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. I use Trojans, the kind with a little reservoir at the end. Are you pinching the tip of the condom as it's applied, to squeeze out the air and leave a tiny bit of room for, er, fluid output? Maybe put a few drops in the tip of the condom before you put it on?

Re: condoms

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
yea i do. i make sure theres plenty of room and the air is gone.

Re: condoms

(Anonymous) 2014-11-27 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm, I don't know then. In all the years I've used condoms, I had one breakage. 90% breakage is really alarming, so I hope you're on the pill and have a back up birth control plan, but even so... yeah, condom breakage is not good.

Maybe shop around and try different brands, anon. Or I guess it could be something to do with technique during intercourse, but even that seems unlikely. You're not using an oil or petroleum jelly based lube with latex condoms, are you? They weaken the latex and cause breakages.

Re: condoms

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
if they're used correctly, then it's actually fairly uncommon for them to break (definitely not as common as most abstinence programs in school lead kids to believe at any rate). some common reasons they break is that they're expired, they've been stored incorrectly, or they aren't the correct size

Re: condoms

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah thats why im concerned. i know theyre being used correctly and that theyve been stored safely. theyre also not expired. i guess they might be the wrong size, but i just kinda find that hard to believe since the guy im with really isnt that big/wide. ill look into it tho.

I...no. I've been using condoms with boyfriends since I was sexually active and it broke a grand total of 1 time in all those years.

Something is going wrong there. Are you leaving a bit of space at the tip?

And I dunno, I never tried rally cheap brands. Durex is awesomesauce.

Oh, another thing - neither of you is keeping them in your wallet/back pocket/somewhre with friction, right? Because that will damage them.

Re: condoms

(Anonymous) 2014-11-26 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
nope, stored away in our bedrooms. :s
and yeah i always pinch the tip. im guessing it's either a condom size thing or maybe im not using as much lube as i should be? for the record, i dont get wet when im aroused like most people do, so maybe that has something to do with it. i really dont know, which is bothersome because i like to think im educated on condom use and sex ed

Well, might be TMI here, but I don't even use lube for vaginal sex...if you lack of lubrication might be an issue - but, more TMI, I never had trouble with condoms for anal either, and that's not exactly self-lubricating. If you're using lube to compensate you should be fine unless..wait, you're using condom-compatible lube, right? Water-based?

Edit: Sorry I see you replied sarillia. I'd switch brands and see what it does. Also, is your partner average-sized?

You're not using oil based lube with latex condoms are you?

Re: condoms

(Anonymous) 2014-11-27 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
nope. water based lube and latex condoms only.

Hmm, clearly you have angered the condom fairy somehow. You must appease it by leaving a condom under your pillow.

I find polyisoprene more durable than latex. Also more comfortable.

Although... I'd be remiss if I didn't at least suggest the idea of sabotage. I had a high condom breakage rate with one (and only one) of my girlfriends, and I have reason to believe she was poking pinholes in them. Do you think that's a possibility?

Re: condoms

(Anonymous) 2014-11-27 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
This is the first thing that I thought of, too.

It sounds horrible... but from what everyone else is saying, condom breakage sounds really unusual. Especially 90%. Considering OP seems to be doing most things right to ensure no breakage occurs w/r/t storage and stuff, it's a possibility they should consider.

How much do you trust your partner, OP?

no no, this guy doesnt have any experience using condoms so he lets me put them on, and we've used both his and mine. in fact mine were more likely to break than his, and i got mine from planned parenthood. :/
we're just friends too and hes really secretive about our fwb status so i dont have any reason to believe he'd want a kid with me.

Having read that you seem to be putting them on correctly and that you aren't using a non-recommended brand of lube, I only have a few suggestions. Condoms usually only tend to break if they are old/expired or if the size is way too big.

A new, properly fitting condom used correctly should basically never break. They have stretch tests for those things that inflate them with massive amounts of air to ensure product quality.

Aside from user error, buying expired merchandise, or using something so big that it slips off, there should be no reason for that many condoms to break that quickly.

Re: condoms

(Anonymous) 2014-11-27 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I saw, upthread, you said the guy you're sleeping with doesn't get off with a condom on -- does he say he can't feel things?

My guy said that, but he was getting standard condoms in 3-packs from 7-11. Then I introduced him to TROJAN Ultra Thin Lubricated Condoms. They make a HUGE difference, and they don't have a higher break rate than any of their other condoms (which, last I checked, are best in the North American business). I haven't seen him in a few months, but I think I've converted him, from his convenience store find.

Japanese condoms are the best made because they were the only legal form of contraception for so long. Try some of those?

And definitely change size. Average length (in NA, again) is only about 4-5", with a 3-4" circumference. The condom shouldn't be a snug fit at all -- he should have room to move, with the condom only snugging up around the base of the penis.

Keep putting them on just like you have, and using lube. I don't get wet, either, and it's just as important for my comfort as the integrity of the condom -- dry rubber doesn't feel any better rubbing against a vagina as it does on a penis.

Actually, that's a thought: Are you getting lubricated condoms? If not, maybe putting a little bit of lube on his penis before rolling the condom on? Not enough so it slips off, but that may have something to do with it breaking so often.

i actually didn't know a snug fit was out of the ordinary/indicative of a small condom. i thought they were supposed to be snug :( guess i know less than i thought.

i wouldnt say theyre SUPER tight on him but enough that im thinking that could be the problem. size/friction seem to be the most likely reasons. i'll look into your condom suggestion, thank you!

It's probably the size. They're probably too small. Get the magnums, anon!
