How is that revolutionary? There are lots of female characters who don't have men as their priority, unless you think "female character has anything to do with a man" = she's making him her priority.

Yes. I don't know what kind of media the OP is consuming, but there are plenty of books and films where heterosexual women have other priorities.

(And I cannot say the same about books and films containing canonically aro-ace women, tbh.)

I'd add in "Or being a Single Mother/Mother/Babies Babies Babies!" To the list too. Being a baby cannon is also an acceptable obsession for women.

Try Orphan Black.

This.

Strange Empire is promising so far too, though it's overly rapey.

It's two separate issues. You're mixing your apples, OP. More asexual folk in media don't mean less good female characters. There's no link.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-29 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder if they're responding to mixed apples? "I wish there were more asexual characters in media so everyone wouldn't be obsessed with sex and dating all the time!" When it would be entirely possible for them not to be obsessed with sex and not asexual at the same time.

I think what OP is saying is that there's this common belief in fandom that the ONLY way a woman can care about something more than or as much as getting or keeping a man is

1. She's gay, or
2. She's asexual

That there is absolutely no way a woman can have higher priorities and still be interested in sex with men unless she absolutely doesn't want a man ever. It's... messed up. I'd love to see more representation and most of my ships are femslash, but a lot of headcanons are based on dumb shit like not being able to imagine a woman not being obsessed with the male protag's dick rather than "wouldn't it be cool if?"

My head just went... Xena!
I really have to admit that I was shocked after watching a few episodes, that she had sex with/loved guys. I'd totaly assumed that amazon=lesbian.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh sadly yes to your last paragraph. It's very similar to the shit in m/m slash where the people are like "omg, there's no other explanation for why this guy got scared when his best friend was hurt!" rather than "wouldn't it be cool if?"

I know I'll sound silly for saying it, but I've always found it disappointing that slash and femslash fans seem to have just as rigid gender expectations/stereotypes as your average anti-slash het fan, even if their rigid stereotypes are a bit broader. Before I really delved into fandom, I had this weird fantasy in my head where slash fans were these wonderful stereotype-dissolving paragons of open-mindedness.

Call me a grump, but I personally don't see much intellectual progress between "not conforming to gender stereotypes is Wrong and Unnatural" and "not conforming to gender stereotypes is Wrong and Unnatural unless you're gay/lesbian."

I agree with this. I think what the OP said was reasonable, if poorly-stated.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
Considering that I have seen people make that assumption about real-life women, I think you're spot on.

I agree, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-29 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I know they're out there. USA TV has a lot of them, actually.

But it does seem like some writers are afraid to let a female character be actually, seriously, not-just-in-theory heterosexual unless that's all she is. Looking at you, comic books.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-29 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Is all social justice a competition? Are all SJ relevant characters also Highlander now? Why are you even connecting these things?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-29 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Asexual =/= not hetero-romantic.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's super annoying when you get the rare female character that isn't interested in anyone and the fandom jumps on "they MUST be asexual." I mean come on. I'd love to see some asexual characters too but it's possible for all sorts of women not to be interested in relationships for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes fandom seems really backwards with their reasoning for things.

I don't think I'd consider it more revolutionary. I can't seem to think of one character that's be acknowledged as asexual in canon. But man can't we get more of both types of characters all round?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
I can't seem to think of one character that's be acknowledged as asexual in canon.

The only one I know of is Voodoo from Sirens but the way it was handled pissed me off. Other characters, including a gay guy, referred to her sexuality as a "pathology" and called her "not human" and it's not like they were portrayed as assholes for saying those things, either. There's no way they'd get away with saying that stuff about the gay character, and it was just bullshit.

The other characters that are commonly interpreted by fans to be asexual also have people being dicks about it...what I'd really like is not just more asexual characters, but ones where it's not a huge deal and something other people criticize or make fun of them for. Or even just ONE, really.

In games that don't have same-sex option, I always play as a guy so I can romance the women. If I can be a woman and romance the other women, I do that. It's pretty straightforward!

Why not more of both? Problem solved.

Um, not that your concerns aren't important too, but call me when I can use the words "asexual" or "aromantic" and have people know what I mean. Y'know? To me, that's the important part of representation, along with having someone that I feel I can relate to in that way. (Disclaimer: on the ace spectrum, not aro.)

Additionally, seconding the above anon that pointed out that asexual =/= heteroromantic. I feel like the difference between romantic and sexual attraction really needs to be highlighted more in spaces outside of the relevant internet communities.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-02 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
+1! I'm with you on this, OP.
