Netflix might be replacing movie theaters.

Thoughts? Do you like the idea? Don't like the sound of it? Think it will kill the theater industry? Or infinitely improve your chance of seeing new movies?

For me, I love it and I hope it does replace the theater industry as we know it. Sure, it does suck that like Blockbuster people will be having to find alternative jobs. However, it's infinitely more convenient and I would pay to see more movies streamed onto Netflix than the spare few I go see in theaters on a stiff chair with god knows what stuck on the floor and seats.

I don't know, I like going to the theater every once in a while. I'd be sad if they went away.

I don't like the idea at all.

My country just got Netflix this fall, and I love it, but a TV screen will never replace the theatre experience for me.

Generally I watch series on the small screen, but I go see movies in theatres. I rarely watch movies on a TV screen at all.

I don't know. I rarely go to the cinema (far too expensive if I'm not 100 % sure I want to watch a movie, plus I have glasses and the current 3D trend is really annoying) but if I do, I do it because I want to watch the movie on a big screen. So for movies like that, I would still want a proper cinema screen. For all those movies I think about watching but then go "meh, nah, too expensive", I think I'd actually like the option to watch them at home when they're still new - but then again I'm not that much of a movie lover that I couldn't wait until they come out on DVD etc.

I'm not surprised because the theatre industry is even worse than the radio industry at keeping up with trends and technology.

Theatre needs to tout what it can provide to its consumers and look at why those same consumers would rather watch movies at home. When consumers cite price and "not being around rude strangers with sticky shit on the floor" as their top reasons for preferring movies at home, the theatre industry needs to do what they can to change that, if they can. Prices, they can control. Rude strangers, not so much. The decline has been going on for a long time, but Netflix and other services are hastening it because people finally have a viable, cost-effective alternative, now that their home theatre systems can be just as awesome as a movie theatre.

What I'd be interested in seeing if this means the end of the blockbuster explosion-fest. The kinds of movies that are only really worth seeing in a theatre. If theatres decline, the value of producing theatrical releases over small-screen genres (dramas, non-visual comedies, etc) should theoretically also decline.

Netflixs hasn't really caught on here so I hope not.

Re: Netflix might be replacing movie theaters.

The problem is that going to the movie theaters stopped being the fun occasion it used to be. You have to buy insanely expensive snacks (or smuggle them in, but that's not the same thing), sit in a freezing cold theater, all to watch a film that, despite your most earnest hopes, ended up being trite and cliche. Or you don't go to the movies at all because everything that's playing is either for kids or some gory action film. Or yet another comic book remake.

So on that end, I prefer Netflix. I even have movie nights with friends. But I still miss actual movie theaters.

SA: Actual movie theaters? Sorry, brain fart there. Ignore that last part. I meant to end with "I miss the way theaters used to be."

I don't know about replacing, but I'd lovelovelove it if they could coexist side by side. Think about it: people who want to go to the theater already go. People like me who absolutely hate the experience happily wait a couple days for a decent quality cam, if it's a movie they can't wait to see released on DVD/for legit download.

You're never going to replace the theater experience, but you might actually get extra viewers by making it available legally from home.

I really can't see it replacing theaters, I thing Netflix is underestimating how many people people like going to the theater, and love to watch things on the big screen.

There is definitely a market for this kind of thing. Personally I would love it. I would love to be able to watch new movies from home. I very rarely get the chance to go to the theater to begin with.

It will be interesting if it happens. I used to go to the movies once a week, or at least once a month. It was a family affair, or a fun thing to do with friends. As prices for movies went up and all the local cinemas closing down [btw, it was a gorgeous cinema that used to be an opera house or something a long way back] (I have to do some serious commuting [public transport] if I want to go see a movie now)I only go to theatres once every 3-6 months. I actually caught up on films while in flight. Most movies I see are online or on tv now, so it wouldn't be a big deal to me. I still like going to the cinema though, and I would go if one opened nearby...but it is what it is.

I never go to theater anymore and just wait to watch newer movies when I can find them online, so I'm down with this.

I love seeing movies on the huge screen, especially an awesome movie with a packed theater. I'd be sad if that went away.

I pay $8 a month for hundreds of movies on Netflix, and find enough of them interesting that I can't get my to-watch list under 70, I can watch them as often as I like, whenever and however I like. Whereas I have to pay $8 to see one film, one time, in the nearest theater, and it's only that cheap on discount Tuesdays.

I truly enjoy the theater experience, there's nothing quite like watching a big dramatic movie with total strangers laughing and crying and applauding right along with you, but it's an experience that just isn't worth the money for me outside of a few times a year, which I guess isn't enough to keep theaters going in comparison to Netflix/Hulu/Crunchyroll/what have you.

No way I can get netflix to work here. On this connection.
But I am hypersensitive to sound and the cinema always leaves my ears sore.

Do you know why it wouldn't catch on? Internet. Netflix and streaming all depend on having good internet, which is something still out of reach for many areas of the USA, never mind the rest of the world. A side-by-side approach would work out great overall, but I know people who don't have Netflix period (Redbox or Amazon Unbox works fine for them) as well as people who prefer to save for that once-a-month theater experience rather than have a monthly subscription fee. Also, everyone in this thread is assuming Netflix wouldn't increase their prices to account for the immediate content, which they would have to pay a hefty sum to acquire in the first place. Netflix might get rights to stream new movies, but I'd expect $60+ charges a month, which is pretty common with pay-per-view.

All debate aside, the entire issue can all be summed up in numbers though. The article linked mentions that Netflix had 31 million streaming video customers in their third quarter. While that number is impressive, it's still nothing compared to the 319 million people in the USA. Ten percent of people in the country use Netflix. Nobody's shutting down a sure thing for ten percent of the country.

Netflix is something like $8 a month, right? If they started showing brand new movies, those prices would either sky rocket (theaters pay for the rights to show those movies on certain dates, remember) or they'd have to adopt a rental system like what Amazon does (you can rent movies before they're released on DVD). You guys are nuts if you think you'll get to see all the hottest summer movies for that same $8 a month.

Someday humans will be extinct and our planet will be dead so this seems pretty irrelevant in comparison.

I don't know if Netflix would ever replace theaters outright, but it would be nice if they could coexist somehow. I've mentioned before I get motion sick at some movies and I would love if I could stream the latest Marvel movie or whatever and actually get to see it while all the interesting discussions are happening instead of months and months later, and not have to worry about throwing up midway through the film.

Gee I hope not.

I went to my first drive in cinema recently. It was pretty packed.

Mm, I don't know. There's a sort of social aspect of going to a theater that I'd really miss. Being in a roomful of strangers all laughing or gasping or otherwise emoting along has a great sort of energy that I really love being around-- I feel like if I had to stay at home to watch all movies, I'd feel pent-up and lonely.

what about Rocky Horror? you kind of have to use a big screen for that.

I can't disagree with Netflix. The problem with movies these days is that TV shows have gotten so good. They have the same FX shots, the same continuous storylines, the same great actors...what is my motivation to watch a movie instead? So movies try to distinguish themselves by being IMAX or 3D or whatever the hell, and their last-ditch, fingers-dangling-on-the-ledge effort to keep audiences watching is to limit accessibility. It's only going to work for so long. Just like HBO finally gave in and is becoming available as a stand-alone.
