(Anonymous) 2014-12-04 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)Considering that there are so very few gay characters that can actually be turned straight, I'm pretty sure the reverse happens much more often.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-04 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)And "but it doesn't affect canon!" arguments always have so much of a soothing effect on those hating on slash shippers.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 12:42 am (UTC)(link)if a show has ten straight characters and one gay character, there are already plenty of straight characters to ship together, you don't need to make the one gay character straight.
whereas if the show has little to no gay characters, and they want to ship two guys/girls, they're going to have to choose some of the straight characters.
i've noticed if a show already has several prominent gay characters, you're less likely to find straight characters of the same gender being shipped together.

I am stuck with that one character or OTP, probably for the next several years. That's just how my brain is wired (the same tendency also manifests itself in different ways in non-fandom spaces.)
As it happens, I've never latched onto any gay characters that way, so I haven't had occasion to write any as straight. But fuck yes I would, if it was that or not do any fun fannish things at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)Yes, Ultimate Marvel's version of Nick Fury was based off of Samuel L Jackson's appearance. If I recall correctly, he actually gave them permission to use his likeness in exchange for being able to play Nick Fury if a movie adaptation ever included his character
