Are there many erotic stories that start with describing a kid? I mean, there is kid fic... but a lot of that is more fluffy or romantic and not straight-up erotic.

Maybe they mean erotic stories that open with a flashback to the hero's youth?

A bit trope in "erotic" stories is the sexual awakening of the protagonist. It was even in one of those "how-to" inhouse guidelines for one of the big romance publishers before the internet obliterated pulp romance publishing. Trouble is it meant that the protag would be an older teen or in their early 20s, however without the house editorial staff to clarify it, too many people think it means start with a kid as soon as puberty starts to hit. Mainly, I think, because so many of those new writers are very young themselves and are writing what seems hot to early and mid teen writers, not for a general audience.

That second word should be "big" not "bit", dammit.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-07 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, but... I DID have my sexual awakening as puberty started to hit. That's, like, half the point of puberty, isn't it? Start getting horny and discover your fun bits? Does anyone actually put off fantasizing and masturbating until their late teens or early 20s? If so, did you have a lot more time to study in high school than I did?

Reality and Fiction seldom make good bedfellows. Look, most romance readers are in their mid -thirties and older. Do you think they feel comfortable reading about 11-13 year olds fumbling around in the oh-so embarrassing way that inexperienced and stupid kids do, or do you think it they feel better reading about a virile and strangely experienced "naturally" sexy 20 year old who can fully (or at least approaching fully) understand and enjoy the sexual experience? Reality just cannot compare to that.

I'd rather they just skip the "sexual awakening" and start with someone older, whenever the character started experimenting.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-08 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if we're looking at what women like, the "older and experienced" part only goes for whoever takes the role of the man.

For me, I really didn't start being interested in sex until my late 20's. I mean, I'd masturbated practically all my life (yes, before puberty, as in, I don't remember a time when I didn't), and my fantasizing during puberty was more about marriage and children than sex itself.

And.. yes? Apparently? Went into college with a full semester of credit already covered by my AP courses. Studying >>>>>> Sex for me at that point in my life.

Then again, I already know I'm a weirdo. :P

YES! SO MANY! arrrrrgh!

So many NC-17 fics start with a pre-pubescent child! I've been linked to several fics like this and it puzzles me every time. Do smut writers really think this is a good way to start?

As for het erotic fiction of the published sort, let's just say I've been totally burned from that genre after this happening repeatedly. The cover blurb is all about hot the book is, then they start with a flashback with the protag as a child on someone's knee. DO. NOT. WANT.

I think it's because a lot of published fiction starts as the narrator as a small child. Jane Eyre etc. But in erotic fiction? Just not a suitable opening.

Well, there's always that insane Victorian erotic novel where that one dude exhaustively catalogs every single sexual encounter in his life

(Anonymous) 2014-12-07 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Adults who have sex were once kids. Adults who have sex sometimes have kids. Adults who have sex sometimes have relatives, friends, or neighbors who have kids.

I can understand not wanting to associate a kid with sex. But I think barring the mention of kids at all in a story that has erotic scenes is a little ridiculous. The two can be separated.

I hate romance where characters knew each other as kids. So many doramas fall into this category.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-08 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't sound creepy, it sounds like they're starting with backstory, you weirdo. Unless the kid in question starts getting down, then that's all it is. There's more to fanfiction than smut, even if it has smutty parts.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-08 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, as long is it's not that weird "sexual awakening" thing mentioned upthread, it's just... a non-porn part of the story.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-08 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
If you mean that it starts with the kid in any sort of sexual situation, then I can agree with you.

But saying that no kid should ever be in an erotic fic in any capacity is pretty ridiculous. As others in this thread have mentioned, there are many narrative devices that might require that to happen.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-08 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think narrative devices which involve children to a great extent belong in an erotic novel.
