They are both horrible mothers. One of them realized she actually loved her son and is at least trying for redemption (how successfully is arguable). But that still puts her way ahead of the other one.

How are the two comparable? Regina legally adopted Henry and loved him, Gothel kidnapped Rapunzel from her parents so she could retain her youth.

Legally adopted? Considering Gold's involvement and that there was no paperwork or home visits, that adoption was shady as hell even ignoring the obvious problem that Regina Mills doesn't exist. She's a convicted mass murderer who came to this country illegally and used falsified documents to take possession of a newborn baby.

It's a pretty close race but I think Regina wins just based on the fact that Gothel tried to murder Rapunzel's love interest and then attempted to chain her up for the rest of her life just so she could use her magic hair to stay young. Regina's really much better so I won't bother defending her too much, but she does at least seem to genuinely care about Henry.

I love how the rapist murderer (and yeah, she murdered a man in THIS WORLD for his son, so no "oh but it was just fairy tail politics!! BS) gets to have a happy ending with her son, but the person who spent his entire life being shit on/unhappy/lonely/having everything taken from him was killed off so the hawt guy omg could have his family (was it enough that Hook also took his mother? Ffs). Like, whatever, give Emma to Hook, but why the fuck couldn't Neil be in his son's life?! Jesus Christ, these writers.

I don't know the live action person, but Mother Gothel wasn't even a mother. She was Rapunzel's abductor and jailer. If she took care of Rapunzel's physical needs, it wasn't because she was being maternal or caring, it was because she was protecting her source for youthful living.

To me it looks like Regina is a better mother but also did far more horrific things in general. Gothel fucked over a couple of people while making a show of being a mother. Regina fucked over a fuckton of people (including Henry) while genuinely trying to be a mother.

I think Regina is an overall worse person (I mean, sure, Gothel straight up kidnapped a child and stabbed a dude and that's awful but we've seen Regina pull a lot more shit) but I think she's a slightly better mom. Sliiiiiightly. It's a close call
