"have the Internet and are using it right"

What does that even mean?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
They're drawing their slash ship.

Or that "Fanart is the most representative of foreign fans" (as they use a screencap of FFN's filters).

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I know, what a weird way to phrase it. Like... of all the things internet access can be used for, fandom is THE most important? Not um... communicating with each other or the rest of the world, gaining access to educational tools, not utilizing social media to aid grassroots movements against corrupt governments, but... fanart.

All righty then.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
If you see it as a tongue in cheek statement, it works better.

It means they're producing fanart that they want to see.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
it means op hasn't gotten out of their house in a few years.

hm personally I tend to base my opinion about countries less on whether they produce slash of my preferred ships and more on things like the status of women and whether they allow religious freedom and how they treat foreigners, but different strokes I guess

I...what.

Unless I'm reading it wrong, you have a really odd conception of the rest of the world.

I mean, I can tell you right here that pre much all of Europe has internet access - now, not sure if that's using it "right" to your standards - but we have the internets. And microwaves. and central heating. You get the idea.

And even in places where you don't expect it - I mean, I've been in tiny villages in India that STILL had internet - sure there were like 4 old PC's in an internet café - but, people pretty mmuch everywhere are online.

Nah Viking ships and invading Great Britain is where it's at...

random history lesson, the first country in the world to get connected to the internet (after the US) was Norway, we beat the Brits by like half a day.

"I can tell you right here that pre much all of Europe has internet access"

Same for Latin America and even most poor areas around here have Internet right now.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
As far as I know, a lot of Europe even has better and faster internet than most of America.

We're a denser population, so it's easier to create the broadband/wifi infrastructure.

I have no idea what you're trying to say, OP, but...

Countries become a little less abstract for me when I see fans born/living there. It's a little like a watered-down version of knowing someone from there. It makes countries feel real in a way memorizing them on a map doesn't.

I have even less of an idea what you're trying to say with the fanart bit.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda know what the OP means. I feel exactly the same about porn tumblrs.

I know it's illogical, but when I find a purveyor of fine porn on tumblr and find out they're from Denmark/Australia (to name two of the ones I was on yesterday) then it makes those countries a little more real to me. I also feel like they're using the internet properly, for the purpose the creator intended.

Thank you, horny fellow citizens of the world.

"The Internet is for porn" (c)

[personal profile] making_excuses 2014-12-11 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
Other random history lesson: Denmark was known for their risky (aka porny) films in the silent film era. I'd be more surprised if they didn't do porn tbh.
cloud_riven: A doodle of Darkwing Duck with a finger raised! (flappy terror)

But what if you only come across terrible fanart? Does this possibly turn you into a racist? Or does just having fanart-producing fans validate them?

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind bad fanart. It's still drawn with love and by fans. I love it.

Not racist as race doesn't come into this. Country-ist, culture-ist? Kinda classist because not everybody has an Internet access.

Fanart, fanfics, meta, all good.

hmm, I'm not entirely sure what you are getting at here, but you're basing this perception pretty much on English language websites right? Because there are all kinds of fannish sites in other languages too, where English speaking fans are probably in the minority!

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Fanart.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Depends. Some people can and do go to non-english sites with some frequency when it comes to looking at fanart. So it's possible that it's not limited to english sites. It's also possible that the OP isn't a native english speaker, we just don't know.

That said, this whole thing is kinda...weird, so it wouldn't surprise me if the OP stuck to one [not specifically english] language in terms of sites and just made their judgments based on that.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-11 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to lurk on all kinds of Japanese fan art sites despite not knowing how to read a word on them. I swear, some of those artists could even make Doro Hedoro look pretty. I was blown away on a monthly basis.
