That's probably because it is. I mean, nut sure about the fic you're reading, but a lot of it has really skewed perceptions of romance - some intentionally written so, but some not.

I sorta relate. A lot of the fic I thought was the most heartbreakingly tragic thing ever when I was 14-15 seems OTT or slightly lolarious now (see: half of all m*a*s*h fic on ff.net) I still absolutely love them, though. Just...in a slightly different way. ;D

Seems reasonable that you'd develop a more...nuanced idea of romance as you matured. I'd be willing to bet a few of the people who wrote the fics you refer to look back on them and think "WTF was wrong with me?"

It makes sense tbh, I know there are romantic tropes that as a teenager I found romantic but these days if I see them used I balk at them big time.

It's the album cover from Hi Infidelity, which was the REO Speedwagon album that brought us Keep On Loving You. The song starts out:

It just goes downhill from there, but it it still gets played as a romantic ballad more often than not.

There's a fic that I used to love that now when I go back to read it, it's actually really OOC. So I can feel this for sure.

As a teenager, I read a fair few old school Harlequin novels.

I mean from the ones from the 70s and early 80s - wow, reading them later was an experience. Even a lot of the not-so-old-school (90s) Harlequin (and Silhouette) were iffy.
