Um, what? This makes no sense to me. What tags, where? IDGI.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr, I assume.

It seems like it's mostly the Sherlock fans who keep bringing up comparisons, but I'm not tracking either fandom. This is just from fandom secrets.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yep , because the Tumblr fandom is the best way to determine the quality of a show.

You seem to be saying that the quality of a show somehow inoculates it to having idiotic fans.

Yuuuuup.

Why the past tense? The new season'll be out soon.

I think it's Elementary that shouldn't use the SH tag. House MD doesn't use it and they have equial connection to the source. I'm forever facepalming about that Elementary pairing, you know which one.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well...in Elementary he is literally called Sherlock Holmes...so that's not the same camp as House.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, the main characters name is sherlock holmes, it makes sense to use it. its not house. its sherlock and watson.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-12-18 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Point. But House and Wilson sound pretty close to Holmes and Watson, so I say Elementary is encroaching on SH tag.

I just like to critisize Elementary for some reason, to tell you the truth.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
No, that's stupid. Any media with Sherlock Holmes as a character in it, by that name, gets to use that character tag. There've been hundreds of versions of him, and they all get to use it.

Kumbaya, can't we all get along, etc.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-12-18 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Rainbows and puppies!

IA with you.

IMO, fans who think that Elementary is a SH adaptation are deluded.

You're right.

In fact, I don't think you're going far enough.

From now on, we're going to restrict the "Sherlock Holmes" tag only to the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories.

haha

I thought it was Sherlock fans not being able to comprehend more than one Holmes adapation post-their-favourite that ended up with Sherlock fans "infiltrating" Elementary circles to shit post? I know that Sherlock fandom probably thinks it has a dedicated rival, but they come off too strong for it to be requited imo.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
It seems especially petty considering that in every way that counts outside the tiny insular microcosm of Tumblr fandom, Sherlock has "won" in every possible way that counts: BAFTAs and Emmys and huge, huge ratings that rake in the $$$ and pretty much guarantee the cast can do this for the rest of their lives if they want, on whatever terms they want. Elementary has never won anything and hangs on by a thread a lot of the time. (It came up for some reason at my job the other day and most of the people in there had never even heard of it).)

Elementary is so great!!! JOAN!

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
You do realize there are a lot of people who enjoy both, right? And that those people vastly outnumber the dead-enders still overinvested in a dumb flame war from 2 or 3 years ago?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Way back in the day, every third post on tumblr tagged with "Elementary" was actually all about BBC Sherlock. Either a powerpoint display about how Elementary was better than Sherlock, or conversely, about how all the fans for both should just get along and teach each other to sing in perfect harmony.

That was the one and only time I looked on the tag, but it was quite bizarre how few posts were about Elementary itself.

I like both! They're different. I like them for different reasons.

I don't get why someone would feel insecure about a show they like being bad (whether or not they agree).

I like some stuff many people here would call "bad" or at best mediocre. It doesn't mean I'm mediocre.

Because humans evolved to have in-groups and out-groups, and on the internet (where we can't tell race, gender, stuff like that) we create our in-groups based on liking a thing.

Or something.

Because if they think it is good, someone else calling it bad implies they have bad taste.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
And even if they think it's bad, there can be a defensive response (like how you can tease your younger sibling, but if anyone outside the family does it, you might get angry).

I mean, for some shows/books/movies/whatever, it's different if someone says, "It's not my thing," versus if someone says "It's awful," - I am fine with the former, but latter might get you a passionate treatise on all that is good and right about it. And sometimes it has more to do with how someone says "It's awful," - sometimes there seems to be an implied "And everyone who likes it is an idiot for doing so."

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who is in neither fandom, both fan groups strike me as defensive and insecure, tbh.
