Recommendation

If anyone wants to read a feminist romance novel series, pick up any Tessa Dare book. Her heroines are scientists, managers, businesswoman, etc. who take control of their own destinies and sexual desires. She's pretty amazing.

I'm sure there are others like her.

Are they any good? More details?

They are very well-written. Witty dialogue, fast moving plots, entertaining characters, the whole shebang. I'm not much of a romance fan, but these books deliver.

'A Week To Be Wicked' is my favorite. Minerva thinks the local rake is about to ruin her sister's reputation. She convinces him to run away with her for a week to attend a geology conference to present her findings (she's a geologist and her work has been accepted for publication, although the Geological Society doesn't know she's a woman). Doing so would ruin her rep, but save her sister's. He agrees, and they set off on an adventure. He turns out to be a decent human being, if a bit rakeish, and she turns out to be more adventurous than she realized. They fall in love.

And bought.

Are there any of her historical romances that you would recommend?

I have a friend who sometimes exchanges romance novels with me, but so far the ones she's passed on are drivel. I really want to have one we both can squee over.

Her Spindle Cove series is historical romance. A Week To Be Wicked is #2 in the series, but honestly you can read them in any order. I also like Say Yes To The Marquess.

They're not romance novels, but Stephanie Thornton writes novels about historical women. She's covered the Empress Theodosia, Hapshepsut, and her latest is about four women attached to Ghengis Khan. She's really good and her books feature lots of women supporting and respecting each other.

Great, thanks. With the geology theme I thought it was a modern romance. Regency? Even better. Looking forward to it, and I'll try the Marquess ones if I like it.

Thanks for the Thornton rec. I'm particularly interested in the Genghis Khan one. I know nearly nothing about women from that period. Unfortunately, her books are harder to get hold of in my country than Tessa Dare's.

Are the male characters typical rich, dominant, manly-man types, though? I'd like to read romance with good female characters, but also male characters who don't fit the typical romance novel mold...

The men are a little more stereotypical. They're rich, handsome, and occasionally stupid. They do respect (or grow to respect) the heroines though, and they don't try to take away their autonomy.

I would be so much more likely to go out of my way to read a romance novel if it had the kind of guy in it that appealed to me...one which you so rarely find in those roles.

Rather.

It was a funny day when I realized I would be such a sucker for romance novels and reality TV dating shows and all that bullshit if it had people in it who I remotely liked, sympathized with, related with, or found myself attracted to.

If you like a non-typical man in a romance role, try Cotillion by Georgette Heyer. It's my favourite novel of hers because Freddy, the hero, is a rather absent-minded, mild-mannered inconsequential fop, and discounted by all his family, until he shows his true mettle without changing a whit of his real character. I adore him.

The Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries by Dorothy L Sayer have a similarly unconventional hero. I recommend Strong Poison. It's the closest to come to a romance in the series.

Both writers are also very funny, which is essential to me in any romance novel.

Thanks for the rec. I have put her on my list. I went through goodreads and picked the ones that had the highest stars and will go from there. The ones I put on my list are: A Week to be Wicked, Any Duchess Will Do, and Romancing the Duke, Say Yes to the Marquess. Are there any I should avoid despite their high rating?

I just finished A Dance with Dragons so I need something light and fluffy lol.

I can't think of anything in those books that would make you want to avoid them. They were all good! I hope you enjoy them!
