?

But popular formula romance novels aren't incompatible with feminism

Came here to say!

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Shouldn't be. Unfortunately a lot of them are very much about the man dominating the woman.

Chicklit is a much better genre.

Having said that, I don't think this is an entirely serious secret.

Why do you care if they're trolling about this? Don't you hate feminism?

But feminism is slowly taking? If you look at the advancement of women's rights around the world over the past fifty years, things have changed.

NOT ALL ROMANCE NOVELS

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I just wish there were more (non-fanfic) options for romance. I like the idea of romance, but I don't like the formulas or the popular tropes that tend to be in the books.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. The popular romance tropes are horribly off-putting. Erotic romance fiction is even worse.

I dipped my toe in again recently, and it's still horrible. I've been completely spoilt by fanfic.

Not that I ever liked mainstream romances. It's just that compared to a good porny fanfic, they're worse than ever. Fanfic has a much wider range of kinks on offer because it doesn't have to be commercial. It's so much easier to find something that suits me if I stick to fanfic, and tagging is wonderful.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's not romance novels that are the problem, it's the public's insistence that a romance novel accurately represents what women want in relationships and out of life. I think the media is so fascinated when women write porn that they make way too much out of it - like, Fifty Shades of Grey means that women want to be tied up and emotionally dominated or something.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's absurd to say that harmful attitudes in porn can affect your attitudes more generally.

Certainly, I don't think anyone here would regard it as controversial if I made that claim about the mainstream male-oriented porn industry.

Except lots of women DO want to be tied up and emotionally dominated. The fantasy is rooted in reality. I don't have an intelligent response for when MRAs use rape fantasies as defense of their ideology, especially since I'm one of the women who has those fantasies.

I feel a lot of anxiety about this.

I agree, and I think this ties in nicely with the notion that women are a hivemind: 'Oh, some of you like X? That must mean that ALL of you like X...', and no one remembers that not everyone is into/enjoys the same things.

Recommendation

[personal profile] iceyred 2014-12-18 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
If anyone wants to read a feminist romance novel series, pick up any Tessa Dare book. Her heroines are scientists, managers, businesswoman, etc. who take control of their own destinies and sexual desires. She's pretty amazing.

I'm sure there are others like her.

Yeah, of all the troubling things that might reasonably be a sign of feminism's lack of progress, formulaic romance novels aren't even in the top fifty, OP. I have quite a few friends who not only read them, they also write romance novels and every single one of them would guffaw at this secret because they understand the difference between fantasy and reality. I don't think you need to sweat it.

We're winning. There's a constant danger of backsliding but we're pretty damn far ahead. All this MRA and "ironic" sexism is the deaththroes of a bunch of bros who realize they're on the losing side. Literally the only place they think they can kick women out of is their parents' video game strewn basements.

Did you think feminism would mean a magical world where everyone reads progressive fiction because that's never happening. And that's fine. I don't mind if some woman reads crappy romance novels about bodice ripping Mounties. She has the right to read what she wants.

You're focusing on the wrong thing.

We haven't completely rid society of sexist attitudes, and yes, fantasies (and romance, and porn) can reflect those attitudes. But that doesn't mean that feminism hasn't or will never take. If you compare the way women were treated and viewed 50 and 100 years ago to the way women are treated and viewed today (and, of course, this isn't applicable to the entire world; I'm speaking mainly about the West), then it quickly becomes apparent that feminism has won a damn lot of battles. The fact that there are still women who are turned on by a particular set of tropes can't change or erase that.

But writing by formula is the key to making max money. Do you hate money? Because women making all the money and spending all the money is the grand key to winning feminism, so you must hate feminism lbr.

I love pregnancy and babies. I can easily find Harlequin romances with pregnant women or women with babies. As I can no longer have any of my own, I enjoy reading about it. I don't see how that hurts anyone else.

The fact that the mainstream is finally acknowledging that women really really like sex, we just like it on our terms, tells me that the feminism thing did take. Fifty Shades of Whatever is cringeworthy dreck, but it's amazing to me how many people are shocked, shocked, by the fact that grown women like bad porn as much as men do. What the hell did they think was in all those romance novels that have been selling at absurd levels for decades, chaste sewing to fix the ripped bodices?
