Dragon Age: Inquisition.

I enjoyed the previous two runs - does it hold up?

Do you like open world games? If you don't I'm not sure about recommending it. I like open world games myself, enjoyed the hell out of this game but still have a lot of issues with it and feel like it could've been much better. I'm going to be one of like ten people in the BioWare fanbase to say this, but I thought Dragon Age 2 was an overall better game.

HOWEVER, if you play these games for the story and the characters and the romance then I think it's worth a shot. I def feel like this cast is one of the best casts in a BioWare game, and some of the romances are extremely well done (I've never wanted to romance so many characters in a single game!), but the story does fall short and there aren't a lot of decisions to make that feel particularly important. Not sure how much my decisions mattered.

...Maybe wait until it goes on sale or is patched a bit? Some people are having a lot of issues. (Especially with party banter, which is always one of my absolute favorite part of the games.)

If I'll play, I'll play on console...so, I'm not sure how that is for patches. I enjoyed DA2 more than most of fandom, I think, so it's hard for me to estimate.

Which console? PS4 and Xbox One have the best reviews, the game was basically made to be played with a controller. PS3 and Xbox 360 have been less well-received, I've seen complaints of underwhelming graphics, corrupt save files, etc.

It would be Xbox360

The vast majority of players aren't having issues playing it on 360, but it does suck if you turn out to be one of the unlucky few (I am, on PC, which is up there with PS3 and 360 on complaints). Assuming it works fine, if you're not expecting premiere graphics (in comparison to the other platforms, by itself the game scales really well, I've played it on my PC on low quality and still liked it) and are prepared for some minor irritating glitchy shit here and there, chances are you'll be sinking a ton of hours into the game that justifies a $40 purchase. It compares well to the first two entries, a little weak on story and combat but certainly not bad, still very strong on characters and setting. I'd definitely recommend it, but I admit I wish I'd waited longer for it to be more stable.

It's basically on m Christmas list and I'm sort of torn - I tend to bu games second-hand because I think they're sort of expensive, but on the pother hand - spoilers will be seeping in, and I sort of want to play it early on.

Story being weaker will bug me, but I also really enjoy character interactions and combat.

Story doesn't measure up to Origins, but then very little does, to me, I'd say it's still stronger than most RPGs. Yeah, I've already been accidentally spoiled, once right on this comm 'cause I was dumb, so that's a good reason to grab it soon, there's a few heart-rending plot moments that are best encountered blind.

Certain of your choices matter quite a bit. I've managed three runs, and they've all turned out pretty differently wrt the world state by the end.

(Probably the most significant choice you can make to affect your playthrough, though, is which side to ally with in the mage-templar war. The quests and NPCs for each option are incredibly different.)

The mage-templar war is absolutely a major one, but I have a feeling some of the things I did (like...what happened in "Here lies the Abyss" and the whole Divine decision) aren't going to have a major impact, just...varying degrees of difference. Which, okay, is most BioWare games, but to me it felt like I had fewer choices. (I'm wondering how the choices from this game are going to upload to the keep, and how many of these will make it into a future game. The war table stuff especially since...well, I'm not sure I could even tell you how half of my war table missions turned out.)
