Should I watch/play/read this?

Ask people's opinions on whether you should bother investing time into something here!

Re: Should I watch/play/read this?

If you ever need to ask, then no. If you hear of something and think "I should check that out" then yes. Simples.

If you ever need to ask, then no

If this were true then a lot of movie/game reviewers would be in trouble. Sometimes people like to hear opinions from other people

BBC Radio 4 is going to do an adaptation of Good Omens for Christmas.
Should I listen?

Jury's still out on that one. It's either going to be amazing or absolutely fecking awful.

YES! Also, it is only one season.

Very wonderful portrayal of war. Wonderful characters. And (if you are into men) hot, hot men.

If you need to ask more questions, holler at me. I have probably watched that more than anyone one here (I made hundreds of GIFs for BoB).

Band of Brothers is amazing. You should watch it anon, but be prepared to have your heart ripped out.

OP here - Convinced

I'll check it out this weekend.

Based on the replies, I don't know if I'd get any sleep if I started watching now. Although I'm tempted to.

This was miles better than The Pacific, as far as WWII miniseries go. It maintains the same tone throughout, and is respectful to the subject matter. I watched it with Ari, and would definitely recommend it.

Alias and Nikita

I'm not a huge fan of the spy genre. I do like Bond and Person of Interest so if the story beyond them being spies or the characters are interesting, I'd be game. Are these any good? Is there a lot of distrust in these shows (like the main ladies end up only able to trust themselves or something)?

I've only seen Alias, and I thought it was fun. It has some really loopy spy-fi elements which never get properly explained, but the characters are good. There is a lot of distrust, but also trustworthy people.

Dragon Age: Inquisition.

I enjoyed the previous two runs - does it hold up?

Do you like open world games? If you don't I'm not sure about recommending it. I like open world games myself, enjoyed the hell out of this game but still have a lot of issues with it and feel like it could've been much better. I'm going to be one of like ten people in the BioWare fanbase to say this, but I thought Dragon Age 2 was an overall better game.

HOWEVER, if you play these games for the story and the characters and the romance then I think it's worth a shot. I def feel like this cast is one of the best casts in a BioWare game, and some of the romances are extremely well done (I've never wanted to romance so many characters in a single game!), but the story does fall short and there aren't a lot of decisions to make that feel particularly important. Not sure how much my decisions mattered.

...Maybe wait until it goes on sale or is patched a bit? Some people are having a lot of issues. (Especially with party banter, which is always one of my absolute favorite part of the games.)

Smallville

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2014-12-18 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen the first two or so seasons when they first aired, but that's it. I've watched a few Clex fan vids and read some Clex fic. I'm looking for something stupid and dramatic to watch after I finish Yu-Gi-Oh. Should I line Smallville up as my next dumb show to watch, or is it not worth it? I recall having mixed feelings about the show, and hating Lana. Has anyone here watched the whole show?

Re: Smallville

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
IMO the fic ended up 100x better than the show.

I watched intermittently up to season...8, I think it was, before I stopped caring. "Stupid and dramatic" is exactly right, it's a pure brain candy show, formulaic and incoherent writing galore, with lots of absurd melodrama and action. It was terrible in a really fun way, though, not an aggravating one, but I'm speaking as a fan of the comics/cartoons who was easily pleased with the tons of references to Superman/DC canon, I dunno how someone who isn't a fan would feel. Plus almost every character was better to watch than Clark and Lana, and focus moves to all those people as the series progresses to Metropolis. Worth binge watching if you have a sense of humor about it, I'd say.

Discworld

I'm a huge Tolkien fan and I like a lot of the tropes people are tired of (the European Medieval settings, the D&D-like character traits, etc.) I don't mind deconstruction but I don't like stories that basically shit on what's gone before to be edgy or hip or desperate to be new. I like ones that seemed to enjoy the "original" stuff but want to try out their own take. I don't mind other settings to the common fantasy but it's not a particular selling point for me. I've read some interesting things about certain features of Discworld so I'm wondering if this would be good.

Re: Should I watch/play/read this?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
It's very difficult to predict if someone will like Discworld, in my experience.

I'd say try it. If you do though, you should be aware that their are several different 'flavors' I guess. There are books about the witches, books about Death, books about the Nightwatch, books about Rincewind and then the rest. If you try Discworld, I'd try one of each. Witches, Death and Nightwatch books seem to be the general favorites.

To me, Discworld is interesting less as a deconstruction of fantasy tropes, and more as a generally very good, light, breezy series with tons of jokes that happens to be set in a fantasy world and sometimes makes jokes based on that.

So given that, I would probably recommend it very strongly. It's definitely not something that wants to shit all over fantasy as a genre, if that's what you're worried about

Heroes of Olympus

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I read all of Percy Jackson and the Olympians a few years ago and liked it, mostly for the world and its take on mythology. The only (still alive) characters I really liked by the end were Nico, Thalia, and Rachel; and I hated Percy/Annabeth since it was first hinted at.

But... I really liked the worldbuilding and those three characters. I'm especially curious about Nico since I've read some of the spoilers. Is it worth it?

I don't usually like American TV comedies, but the premise sounds really interesting. Does the execution hold up?

Once Upon a Time, Sleepy Hollow

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-12-18 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
For Once Upon a Time, I like interesting fairy tale adaptations, and I've seen a few actors who I like pop up in the show. But is the overall show actually any good? I've heard mixed things about the acting and writing. How is the writing? That's usually what makes or breaks media for me.

For Sleepy Hollow, the gifs look great and the premise is intriguing (especially a Revolutionary soldier ending up in the modern day - history nerd, I'm a sucker for these kinds of things), and I've heard good things about the acting and writing...but some of the posts I've seen about how awesome the show is make me wonder if it's actually that good, or if it's people trying to play it up to support a show with a leading WOC character. I hope it's good, but due to time constraints, I have to be more picky than I'd like with what TV shows to watch.
