Dangerous dog breeds.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, there are some dog breeds that are more dangerous and prone to aggression.
No, a Labrador is not just as likely to become aggressive as a Rottweiler or a Pit-Bull.
Yes, toy breeds are safer dogs to own as they lack the potential to become killers and therefore should not be compared with larger breeds.

People are idiots.

Take responsibility for your pets already.

but don't pretend a dog's breed is more important than its upbringing because it is NOT. It's really really not.

shit like this is why people have laws that make it easier to kill certain breeds and not give them help when they need it.

You're lying to yourself if you don't think a dog's breed is part of what determines whether you can give it the upbringing it needs. The average person is just not equipped or prepared put in the kind of work it takes to raise/train/socialize the bully breeds--or any other high-drive dog.

ok but the average person probably isn't a very good dog owner in the first place.

most breeds don't necessarily require a ton of extra work, but rather understanding of how they operate, and of course being able to understand dogs in general so you can understand what's up with any individual dog.

maybe I should've said "the average person who wants a pit bull and thinks they love the breed." A pit isn't just too much dog for the average slob; it's too much dog for most people who want to have a pit. (Just like how a huge proportion of people who are wild to have guns are exactly the people who are too irresponsible and dangerous to be let near them.) As for what most breeds require, "most breeds" aren't bully breeds. I include understanding how your dog operates, and paying attention to its behavior and its individual psychology, as work--and it's work a lot of people can't be bothered to do.

I still disagree with the notion that what you call "bully breeds" require an extreme amount of work that's above and beyond what your average breed requires. I've met very aggressive dogs who you wouldn't consider bully breeds (labradors and English springer spaniels for example - one of the latter tried to attack one of my dogs out on a walk, and we've had the former growl and put on threatening displays). A dog is a huge responsibility and raising one wrong can be disastrous no matter what the breed.

Taking responsibility for your pets, and not being an idiot, includes not presuming that because a dog isn't a certain size or breed, that it's not dangerous at all and therefore doesn't require any training or precautions. Keep all dogs on the leash in public, don't leave any dog unsupervised with very small children, neuter/spay every dog you own, stop believing that your pwecious fuzzy lumpkins is the exception to safety rules.

I'll agree that I've seen a few owners who think that because their dog is small, its bad behavior or aggression is cute or harmless. I've even seen a couple of severe bites inflicted by cute precious fluffy small dogs. But let's not kid ourselves that a toy poodle, however ill-behaved or aggressive, has the capacity to do the same amount of damage as a pit does, if it decides to bite.

The two times I've nearly been bitten by dogs, it was by a lab and a lab mix. One of them came charging all the way across a street to chase me. If that isn't aggressive, I don't know what is.

Yes, your anecdata completely invalidates every other finding that pits inflict a disproportionate number of serious dog attacks relative to their proportion of the dog population.

We all know that already, though. We also know that pits tend to be owned by people seeking aggressive dogs and then trained to act that way.
