Sorry for being That Person, but: "inefficiently"

How did they misuse the funds, in your opinion? I know nothing about their fundraising activities or what the money's used for.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Don't be sorry, I thought that, too.

let's see...

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I took a look
http://archiveofourown.org/admin_posts/1868

"About 70% of our budget goes to hosting, servers, and other things to keep the AO3 up and running. The other 30% is spread among our other projects, services, meetings and general administrative costs. "

"Our goal of US$70,000"

I wonder if ff.net makes as much with their ad, especially now when most people use Adblock.

I donated because they're the best damn option for fans out there atm.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure ff.net has ads instead of donations though

It's our money, you know. Donations are still - gasp - entirely optional.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
But don't you know, their reasonings for a worthy cause invalidates all of yours!

This seems like an oddly defensive response. OP was only giving the reason for why they chose not to donate. It didn't say other people were compelled to donate or that they shouldn't do so if they wanted.

ff.net has advertisements in the sidebar/topbar, though. It's not like they pull the money out of their ass.

Out of curiosity, how does FF.net support itself?

Having been Chair of Systems for 4.5 years or so (I left over a year ago), I would have to say OP doesn't know what they're talking about. I saw exactly how decisions were made in how to spend funds for the servers and other equipment and there was nothing frivolous or extravagant about the process. AO3 has a world class SysAdmin (it's his day job as well) leading the team to support a ridiculous, ever-increasing load. FF.net is probably paying someone for that position. Think on that.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
OP is probably like many people in that they don't really grasp what goes on behind the scenes. They see things that they dislike or that don't work perfectly and think, "this means the people behind the operation are incompetent!!!!" Meanwhile, if they had to work under the same constraints that the people at a place like AO3 had to work under, they'd bitch about how unfair things are and how unappreciated they are.

People have trouble empathizing, and they also have trouble imagining what the big picture might be.

Not OP and I dunno if you'd even know the answer, but is all the money they raise used to physically keep the site up and running or is it used for, say, promotion of "transformative works?" I mean, I doubt they've had to deal with lawsuits or anything, but AO3 isn't just a fanfic archive, the people running it have broader goals than that.

So why was filtering down for so many months a few years back? Why is the search function such a steaming pile of shit? Why can't I filter out crossovers? If their sysad is world class, why do they have so many problems that are supposedly the result of site load but they will still sign up hundreds of new accounts a day? That right there is a grievous case of inefficiency and it used to be MY money they wasted when they did that. Never again.

Thanks for all your work on AO3.

Also chiming in that the OP seems a little... under-informed? Not sure exactly how to call it without actually being rude.

I don't have a bone to pick either way, except that I find ffnet a horrible place to read fanfiction on, from a purely technical point of view.

The site invariably tries to install all kinds of scripts on my laptop that I don't want. I get insistent warnings from my virus scan provider if I actually try to log in. I just no longer go there at all. If a fic is only on ffnet, I just don't read it. Not worth the risk, in my opinion.

I enjoy that they keep ads off the site, honestly.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I'll think about giving them money once they look like they're prioritizing getting registration open. The current system strangles smaller fandoms where it's much harder to make connections off the site.
I use the site, but I'm also tired of the whining about AO3 being superior to FFN. So you host Sherlock knotting fic instead of self-inserts. Good for you.
nyxelestia: Rose Icon (Default)

You do realize that there's a reason FFN operates that way, right?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-12-27 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, for one thing, FFN used to be user-funded, too - people got paid accounts on it and everything. They had to stop that as part of a chain of reactions starting with the fact they would no longer host NC-17/M+ fanfics. People don't remember that because it was more than a decade ago, but it was a huge deal at the time.

Additionally, FFN runs ads on its website. Now, some people don't care about ads, but some people do. Now, for some people, there does not seem to be an appreciable difference between FFN and AO3 because they don't care about ads.

But I sure care.

My computer is incredibly slow, regardless of Internet connections, so the less ads a website has to slow it down, the better. AO3 is probably the fastest-loading websites out of everything I regularly visit - definitely the fastest out of all the fandom websites.

Given that AO3 is just one of the things OTW is working on - the biggest thing, sure, but still not their sole purpose - I'd say they're actually managing their budget pretty damn well.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-27 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, secret-maker, I just remembered I'd intended to donate to the OTW if I'd gotten enough Christmas money to do so while not cutting into other planned expenses.

No ads on the AO3 makes me happy. And I use fanlore all the time, too.

If that really is the OP commenting above, then clever reverse psychology on their part. They got everyone donating to the OTW!
