The main problem with how they handled it is that, while it's true that they showed plenty of signs that they cared about each other during the season, they never showed any single moment that could have been "the turning point" from a platonic to romantic relationship.

Even if they couldn't explicitly state it, the fact that we never actually see them discuss their relationship or feel any conflict regarding their feelings toward each other makes the final shot very jarring and confusing for people who weren't expecting a sudden "confirmation" of romance.

That they had to come right out and say "yes, it's canon," after days of intense debate is probably the most obvious sign that they did a poor job of establishing it in the show itself.

I consider the point in the finale the 'turning point'. Unfortunately we won't SEE that turn, and I understand complaints about this.

Tbh this is as much about sachiko_san's style of reaction to the finale as anything else. It's fine not to like the final, but to go around repeating that it's apparently objectively shit in every place it gets mentioned, and in a way that comes across as so angry, is really funny/weird to me.

I'm sorry I invested two fucking years into this damned series and then got that crappy, badly-written asspull of an ending. I thought when Bryke were done with relationship stuff, they were done with it for good and then now, they try to get away with it by saying if you criticize it, you're a homophobe. They try to excuse bad writing with an ending that will distract from it. I enjoyed the series, despite the bad writing (and season 2, which had some enjoyable parts), but then they try to just shoehorn in a lesbian pairing that was badly hinted at (the hints they had were easily read as platonic) and then pat themselves on the back for it? Yeah, I'm kinda pissed about it.

You know.. before me and my gf started dating, (Im a girl too btw) we were… get ready for this… friends. And we both dated guys, and dated other people while we were building up our friendship. For most of our friendship, in fact, my gf didnt even know she was attracted to women romantically or sexually. We talked about boys and even had completely platonic sleepovers. No, really.

Then somehow, things started to change. . The friendship we had was great and falling in love was like finding a secret door in your house leasing to an even BIGGER house that you didn't know was there. What I'm saying is... it's not impossible to go from friends-->lovers.

Do you think that all romantic gay relationships spring fully formed from nothing? That we can’t be friends before we are lovers? That our being lovers somehow negates the friendship that laid the foundation for our relationships as they now are?
Because if so then yeah, I can see why people would call you a homophobe.

I didn't say that. I'm not saying anything about your love life, or anyone IRL. I am specifically talking about this one instance. Plus, those things Mako did with Korra? Probably would have been a better idea if that was Asami, not Mako, going with her, considering Korra and Asami talked like three or four times throughout the final season. Basically it was too little, too late.

Yeah, but like, a lot of people end up being in a romantic relationship after being friends, you're not special.

I'm straight but all of the romantic relationships I've had started out as friendships first. There wasn't some magical "turning point" that made us both realize we were interested in each other as more than friends, it just sort of developed naturally until one of us came out and said, "Hey, wanna try dating?"

Look, Bryke even explicitly named the problem: we are conditioned to see relationships through a heteronormative lens which biases us away from seeing the kinds of interactions that clearly would lead to a girl/girl or boy/boy relationship.

The only reason there was debate was because it was so unlikely for a non-het pair to be canon on a Nick show. If one of them were a guy, it would have been obvious that the romance was intentional. There still would have been ship wars and people who didn't ship it being in denial, but with Korrasami, lots of people who wanted it to be canon couldn't be sure (hi, I'm one of them). Those people wouldn't have had reason to doubt if it had been het.
