fandom logic questions...

[personal profile] mekkio 2014-12-30 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Is there something about your fandom's canon that has made you go, "Wait a second, what about...?" or "That doesn't make sense...?"

Well, post those questions here.

They may be answered. They may not. But it will be interesting none the less.

For example, here is one mine;

How the devil has Clark Kent never been evicted from his apartment for missing rent? As Superman, he's always off in space saving planets or fighting planets. Sometimes he's gone for months on end. Clark is too broke to pay in advance, so how does that work out? Does he have some weird deal with his landlady?

Batman pays his bills on the sly. ;)

Supernatural: How was Nick (Lucifer's awesome vessel) related to Dean and Sam? I thought archangels could only be housed in their true vessel OR relatives of the vessel (hence Michael possessing Adam and John). DO THEY HAVE ANOTHER UNCLE?

My interpretation of that was that a bloodline may make a better containment for specific angels but that other people (maybe technically in a bloodline for another angel?) could work temporarily.

Either that or there are a lot of way's to be distantly related, like a line of people from a great-great-great grandparent's sibling.

He wasn't. That's why he was breaking down. Though slowly. His face was slowly peeling away taking on a Freddy Krueger vibe because Lucifer was burning right through him.

But I thought Castiel said that only certain bloodlines could contain angels and that each bloodline was tied to an angel. Hence why he needed Claire as a vessel.

What mekkio said - he was an imperfect and supposed to be temporary vessel, not 'the real deal' at all.

I haven't read a lot of Superman but I did read one where they addressed this. Clark is often a foreign correspondent, so he would do whatever a foreign correspondent would do with regards to housing.

He made a bunch of reports and had someone in-the-know about him send the reports in over time so people didn't realize he wasn't on earth. I figure if he knows it's going to be awhile, he might give up his apartment. Otherwise, he is friends with Bruce Wayne. I bet he could figure something out.

There's always direct deposit too.

This one is really more a canon-or-universal-fanon question, but here goes. Does any official Transformers media actually state that Seekers are discriminated against in a way roughly analogous to sexism, are considered incredibly and universally attractive, or work in groups of three called "trines"? It's absolutely universal in the fandom, but I can't find any evidence of its canonicity.
ginainthekingsroad: Olivia from Fringe, blueish corridor background, dutch angle (tilted) (Fringe- Olivia Dutch Angle)

I know the answer is really just, "because it's a tv show" but the #1 question I always have while watching Fringe is, "Even with FBI blinking lights and sirens, how does Olivia always find such perfect parking spaces right in front of wherever they need to go in BOSTON?!"

Okay, no, I do have a real question: Why do Walternate and Brandon have Fauxlivia abducted to have her baby, instead of just saying, "We have this promising new experimental treatment for VPE that's not available to the public (yet?). So there's a good chance both you and your baby will live, isn't that great?"

I get that they had to take Henry for more testing and treatments for the super secret DNA stuff they did to make Henry able to trigger the machine like Peter, but they could just take him away and do whatever blood testing and DNA monkeying they need with the built-in story that Henry needed more tests and monitoring because of their new experimental treatment? Won't you get better results from a hopeful and consenting mother than one who's terrified and being held against her will?!

I love Fringe but this is just the logic busting kind of show it is.

Around Christmas I was watching my usual half dozen versions of A Christmas Carol and started wondering why being nicer kept Scrooge from dying the next Christmas.

I wondered if maybe that Christmas and the one where Tiny Tim died weren't actually the same year even though it seemed like it?

And my friend said that maybe he started taking better care of himself, and that got me thinking that maybe he had people watching out for him and encouraging him to eat better and see a doctor when he was ill and stuff.

I'm still not completely satisfied though.

My guess. He was such a horrible person before the change that he pissed off the wrong person and was murdered. But since he was a better person after the visitations, he never ticked off that potential murderer.

Maybe Tiny Tim died. Bob wanted to go bury his son, Scooge said no and Bob killed him. (Made it look like an accident.)

I didn't think that he was murdered the next year, I thought the ghost of Christmas future just showed Scrooge a possible future of his, and his death at that point, same as the ghost of Christmas past didn't show him the year before, but took him to Christmas's in his youth.

(Disclaimer: I'm basing my thoughts off the most recent version I watched, which was the Muppet's one.)

So. Ghost of Christmas future didn't show Scrooge the next year, it just showed Scrooge his death, at whatever point in the future would be. Possibly Scrooge would still die at the same point in time, but with a different aftermath (people caring about him, and being sad about his death vs. the death he got).

The only reason I think he lived for much longer than that is because it says "and it was always said that he knew how to keep Christmas well if anyone alive possessed the knowledge" which implies that he was consistently kind and generous at Christmas for long enough to override his previous reputation. And his original death seemed fairly soon because the people around him didn't seem much older. In my favorite version (Scrooge with Alastair Sim) the same old undertaker who was there when Marley died is the one who goes to pawn his stuff after he dies.

Well, there are studies that being happier is better for your health. I don't know if Scrooge's change of heart happened in time for that to have any lasting effect, however.

He started eating more than old bread and broth? He kept his rooms and place of business warmer? He bought new clothes that kept him warmer. He saw a doctor more and had people that loved him that encouraged him to see a doctor? He had people that loved him that noticed when he was feeling poorly?

Re: fandom logic questions...

If he died from illness in that future, not having anyone to help look after him might have been a contributing factor. The new, friendlier Scrooge presumably had friends or at least close acquaintances to check in on him.

I thought Spider-Man was the one with problems with bills. I think Superman probably does pay in advance.

I can't remember which of the movies it was, but there's a scene showing he also changes his general posture and way of talking, basically acting like he or more introverted or has less confidence. It makes a tremendous difference.

na

I think one of the old comics explained it as him having some kind of subtle hypnosis ability or something that prevented people from making the connection. or something like that anyway. it could have been either forgotten or retconned in the comics right now, idk. I think it's just one of those things that you just have to ignore about a lot of superheroes.
