Re: fandom stuff you're super defensive about - Severus Snape

That Snape was the worst teacher in the history of Hogwarts and that all of his non-Slytherin students are walking PTSD cases (see: Neville's boggart). Also, that we KNOW he's beyond redemption because he called Lily a mudblood. That he was objectively being humiliated at the time has absolutely no bearing on the situation, nor does the fact that he was 16 years old. If one screws up beyond the age of 11, one is quite obviously worthless.

Fucking this. He wasn't a nice person and was kind of bad teacher, but he's not irredemable. Ugh.

Meh, what he did as a teenager is redeemable. Everyone does stupid shit as a teen, some of the book's heroes included. What kills me is how straight up nasty he was to his students. I doubt they had PTSD from his behavior (ugh @ ppl who say that), but that doesn't make it in any way acceptable to take out your schoolboy grudges on kids as young as eleven. He went so far as to purposefully sabotage his students' work... Remember when he was angry (or angrier than usual =P) with Harry, so he "accidentally" knocked Harry's potion off of his desk so that he would receive a zero for the day? I don't think it's forgivable to treat children that way for years, no matter how sad your backstory is.

He was needlessly and egregiously a horrible abusive prick to the kids he was teaching, repeatedly and consistently. Whether or not he gave them PTSD, that's still incredibly shitty.

I mean, Jesus, what is this? It only counts as a bad thing if he actually gives the kids PTSD? Is that the standard we're using?

I'd also point out that he was a little older than 16 when he joined the wizard blackshirts but w/e

why does he need to be redeemable? he was a total shit head, but I also don't think that a character has to be redeemable or ultimately a good person to be a good character. he was an interesting dude who did some good things and a bunch of terrible things. I don't think people should paint him as satan, but I also don't see the point of people defending his actions. even rowling doesn't think he was a hero (even at the end of the series) and calls him a bully who happened to be brave
