I've discovered I just have way less patience for longass bookslabs in general. Back in the day, 300 pages was nothing, and now I'm like, "you shitting me? I could red pen out a hundred of these, it's just more meaningless questing, COME ON."

Yeah that's part of why I stopped reading Stephen King, though I'm (little by little) regaining my ability to read books and get through them, and I intend to tackle House of Leaves again because that's about the only bookslab I want to tackle anymore.

It's funny, 'cause I feel like the opposite happened to me - I appreciate long books that I can settle down and enjoy way more than I used to, and I've grown beyond picky about plotting.

I'm just baffled at the idea that 300 pages is considered a long book. To me, that seems on the shorter side of average, unless you're reading YA or kidlit.

Fic has had a similar effect on my reading habits, though I worry it's not for good reasons. I'm starting to think that my reading habits have become so insular that I'm not willing to put the time and imagination into books anymore.

I just finished a book I'd been reading for like a year, so I feel you. I wasn't sure if I was going to finish, but I did just to say I did. I read a lot of fic and I don't backbutton out of many anymore because I typically know right away if it's going to be something I'll like. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood so I'll usually come back later. I try to finish everything I read, but once all the little things add up or I get bored I'll say I'll save it for later and only 50% of the time will I come back.

Last year I read through maybe 4 books and started a 5th. That's actually the most I've read since 2011. I hate myself for my reading habits going to shit. :(

God, that was me with Wicked. I think it took me about 6 tries and 2 years to finally get through it. In my opinion, it was not worth it.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I can read fic, I have less patience for books because I want to read the happy ending, not the "surprise" far too often depressed ending.

I have enough of that shit in real life. I don't need it in my stories.

That's actually pretty awesome OP. I've honestly never seen the problem with putting a book down if you're not digging it. Although I suppose it does open you up to problems with finishing books which I admit happens to me sometimes.

Also reading the classics is really good IMO because a lot of classics are awesome so I'm glad you're digging into it! Hope you enjoy

I've found it gives me more patience when reading. I used to feel like I had to power-read through all my books. Ever since I discovered fanfic, and sometimes having to wait a while for new chapters (and finding, amazingly, that I usually remember what's happened in the story and that I pick them up again with no problem!), or simply wait for a time when I can sit on my computer for extended periods...I don't rush through books any more. I don't feel so bad if I take a few months to get through a novel instead of a few days :).

I don't read many books at all anymore. When I was younger I could go through a book a day, and was constantly in the library checking out new ones, but now when the mood strikes me I just read tons of fanfic. It's more convenient.

(The funny thing is I usually end up reading fanfic on my cell phone, but if I try to read an ebook on my cell I get distracted. Maybe I'm just not reading the right books, but I know having a physical copy in my hand makes it much easier for me to finish. It's odd.)

I do think my taste in fanfic is better now, but sometimes I miss actual books.

I'm the same way. But I think it's probably more that you started out reading paper books (I assume?) but your reading habits with fanfic have been largely internet-based. So your eyes/your brain are accustomed to "fanfic = internet product".

I am completely making this up but eh.

I wish I could second this. At least in the MLP fandom, it seems like the best 95% of fic is equivalent to the best 50% of library books.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't read many books these days because I'm always reading fic. It's one of my resolutions to start reading books regularly again.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I like that it made you more likely to ditch a book when it's not working for you, but at the same time open for a wider array of books.

It's understandable if ppl don't have more time. But if so many fic reader/writer give up on books for quick satisfaction, there's less fic and fandom discussion for my favourite books :P

(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
You must be reading better quality fanfiction than I am.

Most fanfic I read makes me more forgiving towards trashy books, because at least they're not that bad.

While pretty, that picture distresses me. There is no way to achieve that affect without completely ruining that book

I've thought this for years! Though I'm sure there were other ways I could have become a more discerning reader over the last decade than reading millions of words of erotic fanfic...

Just to keep in mind

(Anonymous) 2015-01-05 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Sure a lot of "classics" are classics for a reason, but, at least for me, that reason sometimes means that they have some sort of "cultural or historical" significance, but aren't the best books in their own right.

There's classics I've genuinely enjoyed reading for school (for example, this year, Jane Eyre and As I Lay Dying are Excellent)

But shit like Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man bored me to tears and I couldn't even bring myself to finish it.

I've occasionally read "classics" on my own time just for the hell of it (with varying levels of quality)

Any recs?

Also, I've heard Infinite Jest is good (in fact, one of my teachers told me I have a similar writing style to the author) but I heard it is REALLY hard to to read because it's kind of mind-screwy. Anyone have any suggestions about it?

Am I literally the only person on the internet who is disappointed by fanfiction most of the time and still prefers professionally published stuff?

I read a lot less hardcopy books these days, partly because fanfic is plentiful and books are not cheap. Plus I like having a real dead tree in hand when I read a published book.

The times where I am more likely to get through a book is if something happens and my internet is cut off, but that is less likely now as I can hook my admitedly old and slow netbook to my monitor and use it while my desktop is down, and if that failed, I can still fall back on my tablet. I don't likecould read fic through.
