(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)But that being said, him dying probably would've been more effective. I hated the seventh book. One of the more main characters should've died, and then she wouldn't have felt obligated to kill off loads of minor characters. Ron would've made an excellent character death, but Hagrid would've been okay, too.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)I feel this way about all of the big three fwiw. They're just too central to the story to die without hideously unbalancing it.
The other person who you couldn't get away with killing is Luma, because she's Luna

(Anonymous) 2015-01-04 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)I mean, it would've been really sad, Ron's one of my favorite characters. But I pictured Ron in a big sacrifice scene to save everyone else - mirroring the chess game from the first book - and finally getting to be the big hero. It would've also been more effective because it would've really hit the audience. Personally, all the other deaths were relatively minor, so I didn't think they were that meaningful beyond the "aw. sad." but maybe that's just me?

I don't think killing Ron would've been a great idea, but I do like the balancing/foreshadow-y sacrificial aspect.

And yeah, I also wish we'd gotten a bit more motivation from Snape beyond him loving Lily.
