ot but that blond Korra kind of bothers me :X I get that skin color stays skin color, but at a certain point isn't it just not the character?

because a) people can't actually change their sex at will for cosplay
and b) things like that are often done for humor
c) the basic visual characteristics of the character - clothes, hair - are preserved.
(esp. in anime, where sameface is everywhere, hair is an important signifier)

Gotta agree here. Blond Korra is being a little lazy.

Even Janet Varney changed the hair, and if anybody would be allowed to cosplay as Blond Korra, it's her.

it looks off to me, too, but hell. if it makes the cosplayer happy, it makes her happy - why do we need to police how in-character someone else's cosplay is?

I'm not policing someone's cosplay, because this isn't somebody cosplaying. It's a drawing. I would never, not in a million years go up to somebody in cosplay and say anything bad to them, and I have no interest in talking shit behind cosplayers' backs. I appreciate the effort that goes into it (I cosplay too), and I think everybody should have fun.
But this is a comm for talking about our thoughts on yaoi and whatever, so I can say that for me personally, it doesn't do it.
I mean if you go reducto ad absurdum, I can be red haired with freckles, wear a ball gown, and say I'm cosplaying Korra. I just think that cosplay, as an art form, works better with more effort put into basic character detail.
