That sounds like a really fun and neat idea, anon.

But one that would go very wrong, very quickly.

Quite frankly, look at all the drama that surrounds cosplaying as it is. The people who say only those who can really look like the character should bother, only attractive people should bother, only those with nice costumes should bother, etc. And then on the other end, the kind who say that you should cosplay as whoever you want, no matter what. And then the people who fret about things like gender (is it somehow insulting to actual genderqueer people to crossdress just for a cosplay?), race (both from racists decrying anyone non-white cosplaying white characters, and SJWs decrying anyone white cosplaying non-white characters), costume investments (i.e. how much time and/or money is "acceptable" to invest into a cosplay or costume), the fandom debates about characters, multiple interpretations and variations of characters, etc. etc. etc.

Now, take all that drama, and instead of being sliced down by fandom and/or sub-circle, it's all concentrated into one website or community...one that involves you submitting a picture of yourself to fandom types.

It's a nice idea, but short of having an insane mod:user ratio, I don't see any way this wouldn't crash and burn.

Oh, that's such a good idea! Even just a gallery of characters that you could filter by certain criteria that fits you would be cool.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-07 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
/cgl/ has threads for exactly that

I love 4chan, but there's a cringe thread on page 1 of /cgl/ right now. It is no place for the sensitive.

This would be an excellent idea but it would need a hell of a mod to pull off keeping the asshole hecklers out.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-07 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I was thinking. If anon comments were allowed you'd have a ton of assholes just showing up to mock people's weight and body.

This. Some poor kid would post their picture and in a few minutes there would be crap about their acne, weight, hair, etc.

Ooh, that's cute art! Where did you find it, OP?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-07 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
ot but that blond Korra kind of bothers me :X I get that skin color stays skin color, but at a certain point isn't it just not the character?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-07 12:33 am (UTC)(link)

The blond Korra bothers you but not the black Wonder Woman?

You just proved Nyxelestia's point.

cosplay.com has a thread specifically for that. It doesn't really work with me, since I don't watch a lot of anime, but I have seen people give good suggestions.

I love this idea and know I would totally use something like this if it existed.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-07 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
If you really want to find suggestions, cosplay.com has a subforum for people who want to solicit this kind of assistance.

But I'm firmly in the "cosplay whatever you want" camp. Before mainstream media even started using the word cosplay it's always been about "whatever you want" and not who you look the most like, there were a few years in the mid-late 2000's where a handful of newcomers to the hobby started screeching about body type and skin color, hair color, eye color, and even being the same height as the character. Most of them were shouted down relentlessly and now opinion is finally swaying back toward "whatever you want" instead of militantly searching for characters who are exactly like you.

I've always said, the only advantage of cosplaying someone who might kind of look like you is having to put less effort into hair and makeup. It will absolutely not make you have a better costume by default.

next best thing?

http://www.animecharactersdatabase.com/

You can filter here based on lots of different aspects - eyes, hair (color/length), apparent gender, and a few more. It's not perfect, and obviously just for anime, but it's something ^^

Maybe a GC Thread?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-07 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Would anyone be interested?

cosplay.com has a section where you can do this, at least they used to. I haven't been over there in a while.

Oh, the room for abuse on that site would be too great to last long. Not by the person asking for suggestions but people making the suggestions. Trolls would come out of the wood work in droves just for a chance to make someone feel awful.

Doesn't /cgl/ do this?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-07 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure there have been 'who should I cosplay?' threads on /cgl/ in the past. I don't go there as much as I used to so I don't know how common they are, don't think there's always one but they weren't that unusual.

I never posted in them after a friend of mine spotted a friend of hers post his face and she mercilessly mocked him for it IRL, but as far as I could see the people there were generally quite helpful and not all that insulting (which considering it's 4chan is quite an achievement). There are probably better places to post your face though.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-07 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Good idea, if the internet wasn't such a shithole as far as 'who should cosplay what' is concerned.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-07 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
CGL on 4chan has threads like this pretty regularly. The board as a whole has some issues, but honestly, I got some great advice and tutorials from lurking there.

a bit OT but that Wonder Woman looks really cool.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-07 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Male Misty!

I love it when guys cosplay female characters (or women male ones). It seems exactly in the spirit of cosplay, since it's obviously meant lightheartedly, but it also takes a certain amount of work to make the costume, which shows dedication and love of the character. Perfect combo.
