Maybe it's because I'm not a gamer, but I feel like I'm missing something. How are you betraying anyone by having a hobby and occasionally stepping away from that hobby for a while?

Gamer culture seems to demand an almost fanatical devotion to the hobby to prove that you're a True Gamer (however worthwhile that title is). Particularly if you're a woman.

You're talking as if gamer culture is something worth preserving. If the 'gaters are any indication of it-- no, no it is not.

Given that hobbies will inevitably form cultures, I wish we could work to change gamer culture, honestly. There are things I like about it, or at least the parts of it I've encountered, that I think are worth preserving. But there are also awful parts that should be cut out.

As someone who is more than a "casual" gamer, and has been over two decades: you go play what you enjoy. It's not a damn competition, you're not betraying anyone.

+100

I'm not a gamer either, but in the past I've been a casual participant in some pastimes that people tend to be fanatical about, and it was difficult to face the fact that I wasn't as totally wrapped up in them.

Eventually, as I got older, it got easier for me to both accept my own level of involvement and to not get defensive or feel judged about it. I hope you get there, because y

...ou don't deserve to feel bad for your harmless fun!

I don't really get it.

Why do woman gamers have to fight for acceptance? So, uh, if the guys don't approve...what happens? Basically, they're being assholes and you should enjoy what you want however you want.

Or am I missing something?

I think if we wait till women are "respected" by the men of the internet to do what we want, well...it's not looking like it'll happen soon...

Text: I am a woman.

I game, and have done so for literally over a quarter of a century.

I don’t tell people this, though. Because I am the most casual of Casuals. I’ll be obsessed with a game for a few weeks or months, but then I’ll go months without playing anything more than the occasional game of Bejeweled.

I feel like I’m betraying all of the female gamers who have been fighting for acceptance.

You are fine gamer lady. I won't say "women can't be gamers" isn't worse, but "fucking causuals aren't gamers" does rank on the shit tiers of shit opinions.

Lol betrayal. Folk need to stfu and just play games. Arguing about who is having the more intense session of fun is so ages ago.

Own that casual, dude. I play only pokemon, Spyro, MediEvil, and Minecraft, and I don't care who knows it because WHO CARESSSSS if people pearl clutch and faint at the thought that someone has other interests outside of gaming. You don't owe it to anyone to engage in any hobby in any way that you don't want to, and you don't need to be sorry or ashamed of doing what YOU want to do instead of what other people snottily demand that you do. Anyone craps on you for casual-ing, tell them to stfu because it's none of their affair what you do in your free time and they have no right to say anything.

Hey, MediEvil was neat! With the cute little skeleton dude.

dude Medi was the best. It was the first game I ever played, although Spyro Year of the Dragon was the first I ever finished by myself.

You're still a gamer. No betrayal.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Playing Bejeweled counts. And screw society in the eye for giving women imposter syndrome over the way that they push pixels around a screen, for fuck's sake.

I've had several hobbies and the same shit keeps coming up every time.

Triathlons: oh no, you can't be taken seriously unless you have XXX personal best or under!
Birdwatching: oh no, you can't be a real twitcher unless you've ticked XXX bird off your list! Even if you've only seen it through binoculars at a distance and might as well have been looking at a blob on a stick!

Meanwhile most of us are just enjoying our hobbies and not caring.

I have to give gamers props for being the most aggressive I've seen about their little pastimes. Trying to ruin people's lives for not being "real gamers"? Ridiculously childish.

BTW, triatheletes are the biggest swingers I've ever seen. The parties! Birdwatchers on the other hand are masters of passive aggressiveness. You've never been put down until you've been put down over a hedge sparrow.

I consider myself a gamer since I've always had interest and passion for games. I'm a woman too. However for most of my years I've spent my days playing small downloadable 5 dollar games or short online games and FTP games and just a few years ago I started to buy "the big games" and get into the big franchises and massive ram absorbers. I don't think I would call myself a gamer, since I used to play only puzzle games etc, if I didn't have the obsession over gaming.

I think in this case what your ideals are define you as a gamer, not the games you play. But that's unfortunately the unrealistic, wishful view of the gaming community.
