If you really think it is radical to critique wanting to "serve your man", I don't know what to say to you. Is this chick time-travelling from the middle ages?

Hey now. Some people get off on serving others. There are whole subcultures around the concept.

You know perfectly well this is not what she is talking about "I like the idea of women serving their men"? Couldn't be much clearer.

No it's not. The magazine article posted below quotes her as saying it sounds old fashioned. Emulating the 1950's lifestyle is a fetish subculture. And: "I'm so in control of my work that I like coming home and serving him." sounds an awful lot like someone choosing to give up power and control as a way to relax.

Even if she isn't referencing a BDSM subculture, I really doubt she meant that women as a whole should bow down before our male overlord and work to bring back the patriarchy.

AYRT. I wish I had your optimism. I don't.

Er... only radical feminists cringe at the idea of "serving your man" now? Everyone else is okay with that?

F!S thinks it's A-OK as long as it's "her choice" don't you know?

Sadly, I suspect that you may be exactly right about some members of the community.

It's as if they have completely missed the point, isn't it? Funny how if a POC wanted to be Uncle Tom they would totally flip their shit.

I'm looking through this thread and seeing that you're on point. Any gender-based criticism at all seems to be met with, "but that doesn't matter" or "that's misandry" or "that's extreme."

It's like yeah, people have a choice, but our choices are influenced by society. People don't want to have to think about that because it makes them uncomfortable and because we all really want to believe that society doesn't have any impact on us.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it IS her choice, but I'm still going to be over here in a corner going, "Aww HELL NO."

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Same. And pretending her choice is not heavily influenced by social pressure is naivety so extreme that it is willful.

If she was in an openly known D/s relationship most people would be defending her lifestyle choice.

Not remotely the same thing. D/S at its best thrives on real equality. This is 1950s bullshit.

why wouldn't you want to serve the person you love? i mean, it sounds bad when you say 'serve your man' because it sounds like there is some sort of power imbalance, but i think it's totally normal to want to serve your husband or wife, and your family in general.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:25 am (UTC)(link)

DOES IT FUCKING REALLY?

Maybe because, argh why am I bothering. Just fuck you.

They are still right. But how dare feminists be angry? Men might not like it, right? So strident and unfeminine.

I do nice things for my family. I don't "serve" them, because that implies a power imbalance right there, and we're equals. When they do nice things for me, they're not "serving" me, either.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
hmmmm...i don't really agree. but i think this is more an issue of semantics.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
It's the connotation of the word that sets peoples' teeth on edge. Think of a server at a restaurant. They're not there to be your pal or because they like you so much that they're just dying for a chance to bring your food and refill your drinks on command. They're there because it's their job and your position is superior to theirs in the sense that if you complain, they're likely to get in trouble. The customer has more power over the waitstaff.

That's not how it works in my family, so that's why nobody is "serving" anyone.

Semantics is about meaning and context. It's not the meaningless word game you seem to believe it is. Service, especially in this context, DOES imply inequality and that's what grates.
