Do you think there's an automatic inherent power balance between a man and woman?

Given they're the same age.

Depends, on the people in question, their personality, economic class, upbringing, the same arguments could be used for people of the same gender too... Also if it is a romantic or a working relationship and so on.

All other things being equal I suppose there is. But all other things are almost never equal.

Not inherently, no.

If EVERYTHING about them is the same but one is a man and one is a woman? Physically, the man probably. Any other way, no.

Yep. So really it depends on whether they work things out physically...(hopefully not!)

Yes. Because society perceives there is, and will treat them accordingly.

Sam race, age, social class, education, health status, and so on and so forth?

Yes.

Because the man will be physically stronger than the woman.

In real life it's never this way though. Men can be weaker than their partners (for example, if the woman is a bodybuilder and the guy is bed-ridden as an extreme example). But if they're of the same status of health, he'll be stronger. Which gives him an edge.

It can be hugely undercut by so many things though, that it's more of a technical point than anything else. Within individual relationships anyway.

When it comes to men as a group vs women as a group, though, it's made an enormous difference throughout history, I'd reckon.

No, though that being said, I do think there are more often not power imbalances between people, however slight, and I do think the more often skew to men's favour.

Nah. Take away sexual tension and control for height/weight differences and there's basically no power imbalance whatsoever.

Having lived my entire life as a short guy I can assure you that when you take isolated cases there's really no automatic x factor that determines that men have more power than women.

Yes. I think you're after more than this, but it's simply yes.

Yes. Even with everything else equal the guy is usually stronger and society imposes an imbalance too.
My bf and I are a good example. I have more experience and qualifications, technically work a job higher up the ladder but he is paid more. When doing something as a couple people address him first, especially other men. Etc etc.

Nah. I've spanked and scolded too many men to believe that.

do you mean an actual power imbalance? as in, not imposed.

if so, then yes, at least during child-bearing years or younger, favor to the woman. women have babies and don't really need very many men in all honesty. don't get me wrong, i love men and want thousands of them around me, but it's just something that i think men and women are both aware of. many powerful and respected men throughout history have pointed out this obvious power imbalance.

I'm confused how you have apparently never ever read any history book that in any way mentions the concept of legal coverture. The ability to make babies has never, ever, EVER put women in a position of social or legal power over men. It has, in fact, been used for thousands of years as one of the most "compelling" reasons why women should be under the legal control of men.

hence why i said ACTUAL POWER IMBALANCE as opposed to IMPOSED.

it's interesting that you say this but not that men tend to be physically stronger.

also, it's interesting that you seem to think women have some kind of leverage by making the babies because that's the kind of thing MRAs say but in reality it doesn't often work out that way. you see some cases (usually with dramatic divorces where the kids are older) but in general I don't think it really applies.

I think there exist social factors that can empower one or the other, but I wouldn't say they're inherent. Even in the presence of those factors, their effect varies from couple to couple. (For instance, my father earns an order of magnitude more than my mother, but it's my mother who handles their finances.)

Re: Do you think there's an automatic inherent power balance between a man and woman?

In a vacuum? No.

Taking into consideration a whole host of factors including race, social status, wealth, career, education, family background, health, city/state/nation of residence, sexual orientation, etc., there is the potential for huge power imbalances favoring either person. Also, what's the context? Are they just sitting in an empty room? Are they trying to find a date? Are they applying for higher education or for a job or for a raise/promotion? Are they in competition with each other in some way? Cooperating with each other in some way? What's their relationship to one another? I don't think you can really give a definitive answer to this question without knowing a lot more than just gender and age, to be honest.

Although given the fact that most of society does somewhat favor men, and that most men are physically stronger than most women, I would say that I would expect that if there is an imbalance, it probably falls in the man's favor if society's view of the sexes and/or physical strength was an important factor here.

Re: Do you think there's an automatic inherent power balance between a man and woman?

That's an interesting question. If you are referring toward sexual dimorphism, than yes, in general men tend to have a larger capacity to develope muscle mass than women do, or women have to work a hell of a lot harder to develop the same amount of muscle. Men in general are also a lot heavier than women and in some cases this may tip the balance if the woman is not skilled in some other form of combat or what have you when it comes to a fight of some sort.

Now if you mean on a socio-cultural level, it would really depend on the society you are examining. From a western perspective, men tend to be favored in environments where men are generally in positions of power. In places where women are in power you don't necessarily see as much of this. That isn't to say that within a company controlled by a woman who is a CEO, that doesn't necessarily mean that gender power imbalances don't exist at all, but it may also be dependent upon the industry itself.

In relationships it can vary from person to person completely.
