Do you think there's an automatic inherent power balance between a man and woman?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:38 am (UTC)(link)Yes.
Because the man will be physically stronger than the woman.
In real life it's never this way though. Men can be weaker than their partners (for example, if the woman is a bodybuilder and the guy is bed-ridden as an extreme example). But if they're of the same status of health, he'll be stronger. Which gives him an edge.
It can be hugely undercut by so many things though, that it's more of a technical point than anything else. Within individual relationships anyway.
When it comes to men as a group vs women as a group, though, it's made an enormous difference throughout history, I'd reckon.

Having lived my entire life as a short guy I can assure you that when you take isolated cases there's really no automatic x factor that determines that men have more power than women.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 12:56 am (UTC)(link)My bf and I are a good example. I have more experience and qualifications, technically work a job higher up the ladder but he is paid more. When doing something as a couple people address him first, especially other men. Etc etc.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 01:06 am (UTC)(link)if so, then yes, at least during child-bearing years or younger, favor to the woman. women have babies and don't really need very many men in all honesty. don't get me wrong, i love men and want thousands of them around me, but it's just something that i think men and women are both aware of. many powerful and respected men throughout history have pointed out this obvious power imbalance.

also, it's interesting that you seem to think women have some kind of leverage by making the babies because that's the kind of thing MRAs say but in reality it doesn't often work out that way. you see some cases (usually with dramatic divorces where the kids are older) but in general I don't think it really applies.

Re: Do you think there's an automatic inherent power balance between a man and woman?
Taking into consideration a whole host of factors including race, social status, wealth, career, education, family background, health, city/state/nation of residence, sexual orientation, etc., there is the potential for huge power imbalances favoring either person. Also, what's the context? Are they just sitting in an empty room? Are they trying to find a date? Are they applying for higher education or for a job or for a raise/promotion? Are they in competition with each other in some way? Cooperating with each other in some way? What's their relationship to one another? I don't think you can really give a definitive answer to this question without knowing a lot more than just gender and age, to be honest.
Although given the fact that most of society does somewhat favor men, and that most men are physically stronger than most women, I would say that I would expect that if there is an imbalance, it probably falls in the man's favor if society's view of the sexes and/or physical strength was an important factor here.
Re: Do you think there's an automatic inherent power balance between a man and woman?
(Anonymous) 2015-01-10 03:53 am (UTC)(link)Now if you mean on a socio-cultural level, it would really depend on the society you are examining. From a western perspective, men tend to be favored in environments where men are generally in positions of power. In places where women are in power you don't necessarily see as much of this. That isn't to say that within a company controlled by a woman who is a CEO, that doesn't necessarily mean that gender power imbalances don't exist at all, but it may also be dependent upon the industry itself.
In relationships it can vary from person to person completely.
