There are cheats that keep your sims' needs full for as long as you want to.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly have no idea how anyone plays without the cheats. If it weren't for the cheats, I couldn't play. Sims 1 was doable without them, but Sims 2 and three... especially 2 when it asks that your Sim have X number of friends to be promoted or whatever, but at the same time they have to have 20 skills. Sims 3 doesn't have a cheat to enhance skills, but I just don't have my teens go to school, they learn skills instead.

I must be nuts, because I've played like 7 person households without cheats. It's not to brag, I just honestly sort of...enjoy it?

For me so far I can do okay with two...but I start to get irritated at three. And that's with the maxMotives cheat.

Mostly I just pick one Sim and play them for a while until I get bored and then swap to a different Sim.

I think I'd start throwing things at the computer if I had to play 7 at once.

I'm with you and go the extra mile and play things like apocalypses, trailer park challenges, and asylum challenges in addition to legacy challenges.

You haven't lived until you've had first gen quads in an apocalypse. It teaches you how to take care of your sims quickly.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I get pretty bored pretty quickly playing with the cheats. If you can get all the time/money/skills/relationships/etc. you want, then... what do you do with your game?

Generation challenges. Like take the ugliest sim you can find and see if you can get a pretty sim in 10 generations or less. Or the survivor challenge. Or create fandom sims and let them run around.

I grow gardens and collect rocks. You can't really cheat much in gardening if you start from the bottom and are working up to a Perfect garden.

S4 may have short-cutted it a bit by making it so you don't have to pull out and replant, but they made up for that by adding several new stages of quality, plus making a few plants only gained through gene-splicing.

Sims 3 has a mod to earn skills, and it's one of my favorites. Completely safe, and not a game breaker. It's called the Book of Talent.

Not OP but a Sims Player

Could I have that cheat? I could really use that

Not a cheat, but if you're playing sims 3 - have you tried cranking up autonomy all the way up in settings? It really helps.

I have it as high as it can go. Thanks though.

My problem isn't that they're dying , I would just find the cheat OP was talking about very convienient

I've definitely accidentally killed a sim or two (even now after over ten years of playing). But, to not be able to play at all because my sims keep dying? Sounds like you aren't so great at the micro-managing aspect of the game. And Sims 3 makes it incredibly hard to kill them, so you must be really awful at paying attention to your sims needs if you are killing them in Sims 3.

Never accidentally killed a Sim through needs neglect in Sims 3, though I have in Sims 2. The easiest way to accidentally kill a sim in Sims 3 is to have them use the invention bench. Inventors are highly inflammable.

What's the death rate with that item? (Is it actually called the invention bench? Isn't there a workbench or something? idr)

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2015-01-11 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk exactly what it's called. It's the workbench you use to do your inventing and CATCHING ON FIRE. I've quit with out saving many a times because of that damn thing. Just remember to have a shower or a friend nearby to put out your flaming ass and you'll be okay.

The Sims needs fire extinguishers. I'd automatically include one in every house (along with a smoke detector and burglar alarm).

...of course, given the way Sims respond to fire, there might not be much point...

Definitely use motives cheats, or try playing only one-Sim households for a while, keeping an eye on their motives and how long it takes to bottom out. I've always started that way, since Sims 1. Even two or three of them can be overwhelming if you don't have the knack for it yet. It's so easy for them to get so stuck on doing a super fun activity, then whoops, they're starving to death or something. Sims 3 also has those reward bonus things (I got to play it for a while but had to go back to 2 because my computer sucks, so I'm rusty on the terms) that make it so important motives don't decay anymore at all, so that would help you if you can't get the micromanagement down.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-11 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I have honest to god never killed a Sim (not even on purpose) and I don't use cheats.

The only thing I do is turn OFF aging - I let my Sims live on and on and on so they can accomplish their shit in a more reasonable time frame. If you can't stand that, at least turn the age sliders all the way up to max so they don't have birthdays every other week.

I've never purposefully killed a Sim either. I think my Sims have only died a couple times, and it was from something like a fire. I turn off aging too because I have a problem and want my Sims to be immortal.

(I do however use cheats for money because I want everything right away and kind of use Sims as an interior decorating game anyway. Also use cheats to keep the Sims moods up so I can fast forward and allow them to learn skills quickly without worrying about their health. I think that, and sometimes editing them in CAS, is about all I use cheats for.)

I play with my sims' ages on max too. I'd never have time to do all the things I want to do with them without it. And it feels much more realistic too.

I like killing sims to get ghosts. They aren't gone like that, just transparent.

I play Sims Medieval atm and the possibility of failing is a new experience. Mostly your sim dies if they jump in the Monster Pit while in a bad mood or due to bugs which are many.
In Sims 1 and 2 I had a great success with keeping sims alive. In Sims 2 you can get an age milk and in Sims 1 they don't age.
