Digital piracy (not intended for the discussion of the ethical issues)

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2015-01-11 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey f!s! I'm reading some research (http://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1086/674020?Search=yes&resultItemClick=true&searchText=piracy&searchUri=%2Faction%2FdoBasicSearch%3FQuery%3Dpiracy%26amp%3Bacc%3Don%26amp%3Bwc%3Don%26amp%3Bfc%3Doff%26amp%3Bgroup%3Dnone - my apologies for the gigantic link) on digital piracy, specifically the bits pertaining to motion picture piracy. The paper seems to present some pretty solid proof (including reviews of the existing literature) that piracy harms sales, though there is one reference to a paper that says that it is only the digital sales that are harmed, not those of DVDs.

Does anyone have any comments on this/any further links to good research on the topic? Is it a generally accepted fact that piracy is harmful to movie creators? What about TV series? I have an academic interest in this as well as a personal one.

I saw done amusing stats somewhere which has tracked purchases before and after pirate bay shut down (and general activity of internet) and shutting down the bay did nothing.

I'm on mobile so cannot find easily but a launching point for you?

Thank you! I've googled it, and these were among the first links - http://news.filehippo.com/2014/12/shutdown-pirate-bay-effect-piracy-rates/

http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/196672-the-pirate-bay-went-down-but-early-reports-indicate-no-impact-on-pc-game-piracy

They do say the piracy rates stayed the same, though, so it seems it's not about the impact piracy has on sales so much as about the impact the existence of The Pirate Bay has on piracy rates.

The argument that piracy cannot be fought through the shutting down of sites and prosecuting pirates (and that hence the media industry needs to offer profitable alternatives to piracy along the lines of Netflix) is a sound one, I think, though it doesn't really help my own dilemma. I just don't want to personally contribute to anything that might damage the welfare of the creators of my canons, so I'm having a lot of doubts as to whether I should keep some of the copyrighted media I have on my HDD available for public download.

Ah I must have misremembered the topic I read.

I have divided feelings too. I try to support 2-3 movies are year but I can't afford more than that. Books are easier and cheaper.

But also want to try before I buy with games. I miss demos :( games are real expensive down under. I want to test before possibly dropping 80 on a game. I only buy 2 a year (and play maybe 3 a year?)

I totally get that. I don't pass any ethical judgement on piracy at all - again, I do think it's an industry issue, not an ethics issue. And not being able to afford media is absolutely a problem I can sympathize with :(

I'm more likely to buy a DVD. I know most people are the same. A digital copy has the problem of if your computer crashes, it's lost because they only come with limited-time download codes. If you lose the DVD, it's your fault or a natural disaster happened that would take out the computer, too, most likely.

Pirating, since I'm poor, lets me know if it's something I'll like enough to watch again. I can't afford to waste my money on something I won't like.

But it's sadly not a source. :c

This does make perfect sense, though I was looking for actual stats rather than anecdotal evidence. Still, thank you :) And as I have mentioned to the nonnie above, I'm not even beginning to judge anyone - that would be a bit hard, too, considering the fact that I've pirated gigabytes upon gigabytes of content throughout my life XD
