How would you adapt your favorites?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
A while back, someone had a fairly believable take for how to do a Wonder Woman movie to show that it was possible, and I'd love to see if anyone else had something like that.

So, what's your idea? For the unfilmable? To fix the adaptions that are already out there to make them work? To get rid of that thing you hate? To showcase the one villain/superhero/storyline that's never shown? Whatever!

I'd love to see what you think could actually make for a good or profitable movie. Also, if there's something out there you'd like to see a good movie adaption for but can't think of how to do it, put a prompt and maybe someone will help you out.

I love the character of Plastic-man, so much more than the other superheroes whose shtick is elasticity because he doesn't just stretch - - he forms himself into all kinds of wacky and ALMOST disguising shapes. Like, he's dropping down on a bad guy so he makes himself into an anvil (but still wearing a red leotard and goggles), or he's investigating a theft at a wharf so his head is shaped like a fish. And his alterego is a pretty thief, but he spends almost all his time as Plastic-Man.

I would have this made by giving it to Pixar

Yes, Pixar could run with that idea!

A Doctor Strange movie that plays almost as much like a drama as a blockbuster action movie. Strange's origin isn't shown at all - he's simply introduced to us as Stephen Strange, Sorcerer Supreme. It's as much about him solving a mystery, tinged with fantastic and cross-dimensional and horror elements, as about him having super-battles. He doesn't come to any realizations or Heed The Call. He's a mature, sensible hero who takes care of his business. Also, he has a teenage girl apprentice who does get into trouble, because that would own.

Pretty sure the new Strange movie isn't an origin story.

I think he's had several apprentices as various points, but Casey Kinmont would probably work pretty well. She's a character with an established personality but not too much history (she's only appeared in a handful of issues), so there would be a lot of room to work with

I'd love a The Giver movie. It would have to be fairly dark. The main actor would have to be young and there would obviously be no shitty romance story. And it would start out in black and white.

I'd love a House of Leaves movie. It'd have to be a miniseries or like 3 movies. That is all I got so far. It'd be weird as fuck.

I take it the Giver that nust came out wasn't your cuppa?

I don't know why, but I like the idea of a Giver movie to start in color and end up in black and white as we realize that no, the place is not perfect.

The big one that I would love to see adapted is Michael Chabon's YA Summerland. It would be especially nice to see it in animation; I can easily see it fitting into Laika's portfolio (Coraline, ParaNorman).

With regards to the execution of the plot, I'd just make sure not to compltely shy away from the dark elements. The void stuff is creepy as hell and I love it for that. (If Into the Woods can get away with what they did at a PG from DISNEY, this can easily be done at a PG.) And that both Ethan and Jennifer T. have kind of shitty parents, and even magic can't completely fix that.

It's got such potential for being a movie that appeals to slightly older children, and adults (omg the part about the DH rule...!). Sasquatches! Giants! Mythology! And saving the world with magic baseball! What's not to love?

BUT.

Here's the major sticking point. This is a book with 6 Native American characters: the female lead, her great-uncle is an important supporting character, and then her father and 3 great-aunts are in some scenes. I would require that whatever format the adaption used, those characters must be played by Native American actors/VAs. This shouldn't be so fucking hard, but obviously it is. Just looking at Laika's cast for Kubo and the Two Strings shows it wouldn't even happen at the studio I feel it would fit with.

Make it happen, but make it happen right.

Shoot, between Graham Greene and the former cast of North of 60, you could probably find the full cast among the alumni of the CBC...

A Wizard of Earthsea

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so first of all, it's actually going to follow the damn books, instead of mashing the trilogy together, and calling it a day. Even just one movie that follows the first book would be fine.

Secondly, all the main characters, especially Ged, will actually be played by black actors, and not a white guy who looks like he sits on the couch playing COD all day.

Unnecessary romance subplots will be eliminated.

The wizarding school on Roke will be its own original entity, with its own set design, and not a carbon copy of HARRY MOTHERFUCKING POTTER.

If and when CGI is used, it will be up to a decent standard and used to good effect.

And the entire movie will be directed while consulting closely with Ursula LeGuin herself, and the writers/directors will have actually READ THE DAMN BOOKS.

Yes. Yes, this.

It's weird. I've never seen the Earthsea adaptation(s?), I've just heard they sucked balls as badly as the The Dark is Rising adaptation. But I never got the impression from the Earthsea books that the school on Roke would look anything like Hogwarts, and in a way that pisses me off almost as much as the whitewashing. Ged is black, and he's also got almost nothing in common with Harry aside from magic, in the same way that Earthsea and J.K. Rowling's wizarding world have almost nothing in common. Earthsea is not a cheap HP ripoff.

YES. YES TO ALL OF THIS.

(I actually quite liked the Ghibli take on the story, but I see that as its own entity and not an adaptation. Similar to what they did with Howl's Moving Castle.)

This is one of my favorite books of all time, and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

That said, if you don't think black guys play CoD, you've got another thing coming, lol.

A good start to following the damn books would be to NOT MAKE GED BLACK, but to make him NATIVE, which is what he's actually described as. By LeGuin herself.

Avatar + LOK

Obviously, a movie wouldn't be able to follow the TV shows exactly, but there are plenty of good ways to take the show from animation to silver screen. I would especially love to see more of the political side of ATLA, and on-screen Korrasami for a movue adaptation of LOK. Of course, anyone who took on the project would be working completely from scratch. Especially if they can get Colbert to be the Earth King.

I still think that Wicked would work perfectly as a classic Disney style animated musical film.

I'm really surprised there hasn't been a film adaptation yet, but yeah I'd definitely like to see that.

I wish that The Ear, The Eye, and the Arm would be adapted into a movie. It's such a good story, but it's set in a very advanced future with a lot of supernatural features with three major characters with special body parts (hence the title), so it would take a lot of money for effects that probably wouldn't normally be spent on a children's film.

But then I realized it would make an amazing animated feature! Or even if it was mixed live-action/animation (a la Mary Poppins), that'd be cool too.

Animorphs would be a 2D animated show with a nice budget. And the Andalite deigns (anything andalite anyway) would be headed over by this artist: Taking a Walk

Andalite Fighters

Also her Hork Bajir BAJIR

The cast would be done right a la voice actors and character designs. And there would be NO DUMBING DOWN ON EVENTS. Character WILL die and will die rather gruesomely. Think of how some of the deaths were handled in The Clone Wars, especially in the later seasons. They were still kid friendly, but left no doubts about what happened.

For The Dark is Rising, it would have to be an all-British cast and it would absolutely have to keep the mythology of the books. I think it would work best with minimal or low-key effects, and the bigger magical effects would have to have a very natural feel to them. Actually, if it could feel like Lord of the Rings (but not The Hobbit), I think it would work. And Susan Cooper would absolutely be consulted regularly.

And none of that messing with Will and his family nonsense. Will's family is big and they love and support each other, and that's the way it's going to stay. >:[

The Pendragon Adventures would work best as an animated series, I think, and if at all possible, I'd get the Avatar team to do it. That style would fit wonderfully, and I'd trust them to make sure everyone looks and acts the way they're supposed to. And I'd also want J.D. McHale to be involved, not the least because he has experience doing television things.
