Re: Weird things you judge people for?

I don't know if it's weird, but I judge people who say that horror/gore/violence (IRL and like pictures of maimed people and tragedy, etc) doesn't bother them. It's like "You know losing your humanity isn't something to brag about, right?"

I also judge people who eat certain foods cold. My boyfriend just ate a can of cold Spaghtetti-O's. I'm judging pretty hard right now.

I judge people who think not being bothered by gore means you're a horrible human being, or as you put it, "losing your humanity." I don't brag about not being bothered by it. I feel guilty about not being bothered, but there's not much I can do to make myself react differently when I see something gory.

Well, if I'd said you were a horrible human being, you'd have something to be upset by. I didn't, though, so we're all cool.

DA.

You said they were losing their humanity? I mean the wording is different to "horrible human being" but the meaning of those two statements are pretty close. I think hiding behind "Well I didn't say those actual words" is pretty pointless.

It's not very nice to tell someone they're losing their humanity because they don't react the way you think they should to something, though. Also, not reacting to gore and violence in media isn't the same as not reacting to it in real life. Gore and violence in movies, TV, and games doesn't get to me at all, but RL gore and violence still horrifies me. I cry seeing pictures from warzones or bad accidents.

Oh I read the first post completely backwards. Oops.

But it's still not very nice to tell someone they're losing their humanity. Also, people downthread have given some good reasons why someone wouldn't be bothered IRL.

I don't think it's a loss of humanity so much as it is a greater ability to detach and compartmentalize. That's a good ability to have in certain situations. Imagine how hard surgery would be if all the surgeons kept retching and going, "OMG I'm so sorry but all this blood and the amputated limbs really gets to me..."

My dad's a doctor, though. He's had to be at the autopsies of small children and it's horrible, but you have to be able to do your job and find out what happened to them so you can help other people.

Hm, that's a good point. I had not considered that doctors and whatnot have to do that.

The same goes for almost anyone who works in the healthcare industry, really: nurses, orderlies, EMTs. Those people see some gnarly shit on a daily basis and neither they or their patients can afford even a brief breakdown where they're overcome by all the disturbing things they see.

I'd also include people who work dangerous jobs: military, cops, firefighters. They all require the ability to detach temporarily from the horrors of the job because they need to make life or death decisions. It's a sacrifice they make for others.

Us healthcare folks also tend to have what people will call 'gallows humour' because sometimes it's easier to make jokes about things (even if regular folks would probably find it inappropriate) than focus on the morbidity of a situation.

Yep. My father (and all the nurses I've ever known) are exactly like that. It helps them cope.

...It's not losing your humanity to not be bothered by blood or gore irl. There are plenty of careers where you have to deal with that kind of thing on a regular basis, and if you are sensitive to that sort of thing you just can't last in those fields.

If you see someone in pain enough times there comes a point where you stop having an immediate visceral reaction to seeing someone in pain. It doesn't mean you automatically stop caring about the idea of someone dying or that you start actively condoning it, it just means the situation has stopped affecting you in a way that would normally cause you to become frightened or sad.

I can kiiiinda see that if "gore" automatically means something violent (I thought it just meant lots of blood'n'guts). But I think some people aren't that bothered by visual stimuli, or maybe they're really good at disconnecting fictional appearances from their emotional response to real situations. (I think most people do that to at least some extent.)

"Losing your humanity".

Damn mate. That's a pretty harsh critique.

With probably ever so slightly more truth to it then I'd like to admit. Can't really argue that having to deal with the grim is super psycologically healthy long term.
