Fandoms you can't ship in

(Anonymous) 2015-01-16 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not that much of a shipper, but I do ship at least one ship in most of my fandoms. There are just some though, that I find I can't ship any of the characters romantically. Either because I feel canon realy don't need any romance, or I like them as friends too much.

What are some fandoms you can't ship romantically in? And why?

To me:

Homestuck. I think it's pretty obvious that none of this kids need more romance, their lives are already a mess. Except for maybe Rose and Kanaya, since they are the most mature and at least make some effort to work through their problems.

Criminal minds. I've only watched till middle of season 2 and can't imagine shipping any of them romantically, except for Hotch and his wife. I love them as friends and as a team too much, even Morgan and Garcia.

Brooklyn 99. Big happy family. All of them. I love them.

THIS. A million times. It just feels... weird and incestuous. I can imagine people on the team being attracted to each other and not acting on it, but I can't ship them.

I see lots of people shipping Morgan and Garcia but to me they are more platonic life partner - not exactly like siblings (Morgan and Reid are more siblings like) but they know and trust each other so much it just feels weird imagine them kissing. Also I'm really happy to have a male/female friendship as natural and close as theirs.

Exactly.

I think it's because the show beats the 'ersatz family' drum so hard. It's just not a show set up for romance.

The most I can do is ship people with minor side characters, or crossover ships (I ride hard for Emily Prentiss/Dean winchester).

Spec Ops The Line -- I just can't. It doesn't work. It's like the most anti-shipping situation possible.

Naoki Urasawa's Monster -- I love so many things about this that shipping doesn't take up any space. It's one of those things where I just don't care about the romance at all for any characters

Avatar The Last Airbender -- I do like the canon ships, but I'm MUCH more interested in the other relationships (familial and friendship)

Other than Zuko/Mai and little bit Toph/Sokka, I really wasn't much into the romantic relationships in ATLA either.

Zuko/Mai's the big one I enjoy, but besides that I'm not really invested in the romance. I like Mai outside of her relationship with Zuko too so I don't mind if they're not shipped together as long as she's not bashed.

Yeah, it's one of those shows where I don't really ship anyone either (I even shy away from Amy/Jake even though I like both of the characters just fine. It kind of bums me out that they'll most likely get together at some point because I actually like Jake with Eva Longoria's character. I think they're really cute together). I almost ship Jake/Terry sometimes because they have some cute moments together but Terry's so devoted to his wife and children that I just can't do it. Also, he would probably go insane if he were involved with Jake.

Leverage. I have tried shipping but meh. I prefer them as a family unit.

I like some Homestuck ships but not in the "they BELONG together" way but in a "it's cute when they flirt" way. My only real Homestuck OTP is Rose and Kanaya.

And I don't ship anyone in B99 either, not even Jake and Amy who the show wants you to ship but I think they are better as friends. They tend to be a bit kiddish about their feelings for each other and I just don't see a relationship with them going well.

I'm not much of a shipper either though so there's probably a lot I could list off. Particularly when a story is supposed to be about friends or family I don't ship, because I love those sorts of stories and I don't like when they get taken into a romance area. I love a good friendship story, and we need more male/female ones that don't turn into romance so it takes A LOT for me to ship people who I think make amazing friends.

Criminal Minds is an interesting case for me. Because I have a couple things I mentally ship (Hotch/Prentiss, Rossi/Prentiss, Morgan/Garcia), but I don't want to see them in canon and I don't want to read about them. I just like the idea of them, but when it comes to what I watch or read, I just want the crime solving and team dynamic.

Avatar: The Last Airbender. Which is wierd. I'm not sure why I don't ship. I used to kind of ship the canon ships, and I still don't mind them in canon. But I no longer actively ship anything and am mostly in it for the awesomeness, the bending, and the friendships.

Stargate: SG1: Similar to above, I used to be a shipper. Even more actively so than ATLA. I was totally and completely into Sam/Jack and liked both canon Daniel ships as well. But I've been rewatching, and I find I don't care about the romances the way I used to. Now I'm just in it for the team. I don't want any romance to get in the way of that.

I still like Jack/Sam but one of the things about Sg-1 I like is that they don't give you a definite "YEP! They got married and are together forever now!" with their ships. They give you teases and alternate timelines and timelines where they aren't together but in the end the show really is about the team.

I think it's kind of a fun way to do things, because shippers get their moments and the non-shippers don't have to deal with the romance in their face all the time.

I'm the same with SG1. I don't ship any of them and I just like the team dynamic.

I can kind of get that re: Criminal Minds. My ships tend to revolve around the trio of Hotch, JJ, and Prentiss because they're my favorites, and I ship all permutations of it to some extent. But the most I want to do is read a bit of grotesquely saccharine fluff once in a while.

This has only happened to me in one of the stories I write, actually. It was originally thought out as a golem romance novel, but then I discovered I liked writing the proverbial rock man's platonic relationship with his adopted sister way more than the romance.

Oops!

Anything live-action. I'm not really sure if it's that I can't ship in them or I just happen to not have any ships in my live-action media fandoms. Maybe subconsciously it's too much like RPF for me. Or maybe it's just a coincidence.

Re: Fandoms you can't ship in

(Anonymous) 2015-01-16 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
I do this too. I don't know if it's a subconscious RPF thing or not (RPF doesn't squick me so much as... causes second-hand embarrassment?), but I definitely have a harder time imagining real-live characters in shippy scenarios outside canon. I think something about their being portrayed by real-live human beings makes them more concretely embedded in my mind than 2D/literary characters.

I have less of a hard time with 2D/literary characters that subsequently become 3D, but even then I tend to stick to canon ships.

Rise of the Guardians and Big Hero 6, and for the exact same reason. The family dynamic is so strong between the mains that shipping any of them with each other feels incestuous, and incest ain't my kink.

I can't ship anyone in MCU. I just don't see anything, with anyone at all. Marvel comics though? I've been shipping there since I was a teen.

lol oh man, Homestuck is one of my SHIP ALL THE THINGS fandoms.

tbh I ship something in almost every fandom I'm in...I'd say MLP is probably lowest on the scale since I don't really ship any of the Mane Six. I have a few periphery pairings that I like but I don't go out of my way to look for them and they're by far not among my biggest reasons for liking MLP.
