It doesn't mean you are an asshole but it is kind of an asshole thing to laugh about, yeah

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really find them even slightly amusing anymore to be honest, they're all the same jokes and seem uncreative to me

Well, that one in particular is objectively unfunny.

~objectively~

Yep, no sarcasm tildes required.

Seriously, though, not even from a moralistic standpoint, it's just dumb. The punchline is literally "rape rhymes with grape."

Eh, I'm a rape survivor and I laugh at rape jokes. I'm pretty much done with people telling me what I am and am not allowed to find funny, so you do you, OP.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-01-17 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
No one can control their sense of humour. I consider laughing to be a healthy reaction in a lot of settings, starting with "Haha, this's awkward", "Haha, don't kill me, I'm nice" and including "Haha, problematic but funny, glad it hadn't happened to me, what a relief".

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
ITA. I don't like when the jokes get personal but laughing at the situation kind of relieves the tension and those uncomfortable thoughts.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-01-17 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
My friends are allowed to laugh at me though.)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea what that screencap is from but I lol'd at the punchline.

Meh, rape jokes aren't as problematic when the victim isn't the butt of the joke. Here, the joke is the juxtaposition between something as serious as rape and something as silly as a "rhymes with" line. I wouldn't feel too bad about it, OP.

Meh, I'm one of those people who believes pretty much nothing is beyond humor. I do get skeeved out if people specifically make fun of victims, but the current dogma of "no rape joke is acceptable ever in any context" isn't something I agree with, either.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Like, 90% of rape jokes are always in "trying way too hard to be edgy" ballpark. Aside from using actual people's trauma as a punchline and trivializing sexual abuse, they're just annoying and lazy in general tbh.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Prison-rape jokes in particular are saying that you think the U.S. government runs the largest network of deliberate rape camps in human history, and that that's awesome and hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
The largest network of deliberate rape camps at this present time, rather. Although the Russian Army may be as large.

Not awesome nor hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I wouldn't say they're *deliberate* rape camps though. Certainly, mainstream folk don't give a shit about prison rape but it's not something that the government actively promotes. They just don't care.

Now criminally cheap labor -- that's a different story.

Also, keep in mind that a lot of prisons in the US are privatized.

You want to bring up the American prison system? One of the biggest networks of forced labor in the world, disproportionately imprisoning black young men, yet in a country that prides itself on having abolished slavery?

woow, okay then

That's how you know it's a good rape joke, it makes you laugh whether you want to or not.

(To get TMI for a second, I dragged myself into work the day after I was raped and that joke, dumb and self-referential as it is, was one of the things that got me through the day. There are a lot of "rape jokes" that are just thinly veiled excuses to say mean things about victims, and those should be treated like exactly what they are, but I will damn well fucking laugh at rape jokes that are actually funny and defend anyone else's right to do the same.)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like a case of "Hey, rape isn't funny!" "I guess you had to be there."

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
*hugs* I'm sorry that happened to you bb.
Yeah, I agree with what you say about rape jokes too.

The only 'rape' joke I've almost fallen off my chair laughing at is the "Grapist" ad in Whitest Kids You Know. (The Grapist - a guy dressed as a grape) breaks into houses and chases kids around telling them he is going to 'grape them'. Which is giving them grape soft drink). I am a rape survivor so rape jokes have to be pretty special for me to find funny.

Although I would argue the humour from that sketch comes from the fact that the Grapist character is so clearly a bad idea and so clearly acts like a rapist home invasion and only one of the ad execs realises that this is terrible and horribly offensive.

Text: two screen caps with speech: “You know what happens to a handsome guy like me in jail?” “It rhymes with ‘grape’!”

Text: I consider myself a feminist who takes the topic of rape for both men and women very seriously, but the rape jokes in movies always makes me laugh. It makes me feel like I’m really just an asshole.

A good example of good and bad rape jokes for me comes from This is The End. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Good: The guys talking about how they're not going to rape Hermione (I forget her real name, sorry.) It's creepy but it's very realistic creepy and, though I hate to admit it, it's blunt about the dark side of men without being totally misandrist OR misogynistic about it.

Bad (even though I laughed at it): The Jonah Hill rape/possession scene. Yes, Jonah Hill was evil as fuck in this movie. Yes, we're talking about being raped by a demon, not a real person. Still, I cringed when I saw it. I think that was the point. I can't and won't turn off my humanity for a joke, but I still laughed through my cringing. I would have rather he get possessed without the rape or maybe even get possessed BECAUSE he was trying to commit a rape. But the long story short is that the joke was on the victim and that's awful.
