I feel like every part of this chain of reasoning makes no sense to me

- This will not shatter any romantic illusions because working at Black Books would own
- Black Books is not particularly realistic
- You should not recommend this series, as it's kind of bad

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
The series itself isn't bad, but Black Books isn't realistic. Most of the independent bookstores I've been to are a LOT better run.

I like this series but I agree on your other two points. It jumped out at me, too, as a logic fail.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Different strokes, I guess. Working at a bookstore sounds fun to me, but I wouldn't want to work/live in a place half as filthy as Bernard keeps his store. I also don't like being around heavy smokers/drinkers.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I love it!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-21 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
What, this show is so good.

i need to rewatch this asap, i miss bernard something fierce.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Have you ever worked in a book store? I quite like it. Not sure why you want to crush dreams about it.

+1

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
It obviously depends on your coworkers/management, since bad ones can make any job hell, but working in a bookstore really can be quite enjoyable.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-21 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, in my experience, as far as retail goes, it is pretty great.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like the Black Books lifestyle actually quite appeals to the personality type that wants to work in a bookstore. So joke's on you, I guess.

Also, to counter the anon above, I wanted to say that Black Books is aamazing and that it's one of the few things I regularly quote from.

I actually have worked in a bookstore and it is nothing like this show. So yeah.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I sort of agree. I haven't seen that much of the show so can't comment on that part of it. But I do work some hours in a second-hand bookshop and it's not exactly thrilling. It's probably the same for DVDs, music, comic books. Once in a while you may get a customer who likes the same stuff you do and you can chat. But a lot of the time it's filling shelves and manning the register like in any other shop.

I've worked in a bookstore for a short time, and I've been working in a library for last 9ish years. I love Black Books. I wish it could be that much fun. Instead, I have to be polite to morons and have to rein in my snark and sarcasm...

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I have an f-lister who was heartbroken when Borders closed. She absolutely loved her job. I think she found another book store job, though.

I dunno man, there might be people who would love to work in a Black Books type-environment if they can be the Bernard of the group. The guy somehow manages to get by with barely any money and subsists off of the mushrooms in his hair, but he's also free to be cranky to everyone.

Text: I rec this series to all my book-loving friends…

…for the express purpose of shattering all their romantic fantasies about how cool it’d be to work in a bookstore.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Never heard of Black Books, but I would assume working at a bookstore would be like most retail jobs. It's either boring, or horrible.

Well, my husband did not find it cool to work at Barnes and Noble. More like soul crushing, but I imagine he'd have had a different experience if he'd been working at Square Books instead.

Are you kidding me? Most people would give their left nut to work in that bookstore; it seemed pretty kickass to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if that's gonna work, Black Books makes working in a bookstore look awesome! Drink wine all the time, be rude to customers, hang out with your weird friends... what's not to like?

With all respect, OP, based on this I'm going to assume your friends are like 15 and have never had an actual job?

Because if not, you should be embarrassed for them.

I did work in an independent second hand bookshop in the UK and before that I though Black Books was a comedy and not a documentary.

I love this show, I love books, and I love Bernard. His character speaks to my soul. (And yes, I would still like to own a bookstore).
