I feel like the Black Books lifestyle actually quite appeals to the personality type that wants to work in a bookstore. So joke's on you, I guess.

Also, to counter the anon above, I wanted to say that Black Books is aamazing and that it's one of the few things I regularly quote from.

I don't understand this, or maybe you haven't watched the show? Slobs who smoke like chimneys, are surly to everyone, neglect the business and drink a lot are great for comedy shows, but that's not the kind of co-worker most people actually want.

Lazy misanthropes actually characterize a fair number of people I know (and even myself, at times). Not sure we'd all be interested in working with books though.

I'm a lazy misanthrope who loves books. But I don't really like incompetent co-workers (had way too many of those over the years!) who drink and smoke indoors. :(

AYRT

Being your own boss, opening and closing the store according to your whims, reading while you work, being snobbish about books, drinking and smoking all you want, having two best friends working nearby who share similar hours and sentiments... and you don't see how this would appeal to a certain type of personality.

Maybe you haven't watched the show?

Not all bookworms like getting drunk and smoking on the job, though? Working in a bookstore sounds neat but I hate being trapped in a room with a heavy smoker.

I watched the show, and it reminded me of a few bookstore owners I've come across. The kind described in Good Omens, who considers customers a nuisance and tends to shut their store on a whim because they can.

The mystery to me is how they maintain their business open, but I figure that either they don't really need the money income all that much, or they're the first bookstores to close.

Or they do enough business with their regular customers who are pretty much like them and spend hours (and hundreds of Euros) in their stores.

Lol yep.
